19 essential vinyls you need for your collection from Lizzie McGuire to Lady Gaga
Vinyl records have become hugely popular over the last few years with more and more music lovers choosing the classic LP over CDs and download.
Last year sales of vinyl records in the UK were at the highest since the early 90s with 4.8 million sales, making up almost one in five of all albums purchased across 2020.
Artists themselves have taken advantage of vinyl records’ surging popularity, with established singers and bands releasing fan favourite albums onto vinyl for the first time while rising stars are releasing exclusive vinyls for their devoted fans.
If you’re starting out your vinyl records collection or wanting to add to your existing stock but want a little less of The Beatles and Rolling Stone and a little more Hilary Duff and Britney Spears, then look no further.
From The Lizzie McGuire Movie soundtrack to Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift to Lindsay Lohan there are plenty of vinyl records to build your collection.
We’ve compiled a list of just a handful of essential records that are also LGBT+ favourites you need to get.
1. The Lizzie McGuire Movie soundtrack

The 2xLP vinyl features classics including “Why Not” by Hilary Duff, “The Tide Is High” by Atomic Kitten and the ballad version of “What Dreams Are Made Of” by Isabella and Paolo, the snake. The exclusive LP is currently only available to buy from the US Urban Outfitters website. But fans outside the US can still order it and pay extra for international shipping. 2. Dua Lipa – Future Nostalgia
This number one record by Dua Lipa was the soundtrack to many people’s lockdown in 2020. She brought the club to the bedroom with songs like “Physical”, “Levitating” and “Don’t Start Now” and gave us all hope that one day we’ll dance again together to these certified bangers. You can get the vinyl version of the record from Urban Outfitters UK here for £22 and while you’re at it go and get a disco ball for your room to keep the party alive and spirits high until this is all over!
3. Taylor Swift – Folklore
On the flip side, another album that became the soundtrack to lockdown 2020 was Taylor Swift’s much more understated folklore. It saw her switch up the stadium-filling pop for indie-folk, The National and Bon Iver-collabing, cottagecore ballads and everyone ate it up! The vinyl album broke streaming records and topped the charts after the singer dropped the surprise release, breaking the Internet along the way. The vinyl version is priced at £30 from Urban Outfitters UK here. Plus Swifites can also get vinyl versions of her self-titled debut, Red, 1989 and Lover from Urban Outfitters.
4. Britney Spears – Oops!… I Did It Again
The Princess of Pop is an icon who’s always had the support of the LGBT+ community and it’s as strong as ever during the recent #FreeBritney campaign. Fans of the singer can get their hands on her second album Oops!… I Did It Again which features the title track, “Lucky” and “Stronger”, imagine having that many iconic singles on your second album? The vinyl is priced at £25 from Urban Outfitters here. The UK online store is currently also selling Glory while US fans are being fed, because they can get a limited edition vinyl of …Baby One More Time, Oops!… I Did It Again, self-titled, In The Zone, Greatest Hits: My Prerogative, Blackout, Circus, Femme Fatale and Glory, the deluxe edition which are all available here.

Fans can also get their hands on a Positions vinyl which comes in a clear coke bottle design, and you can find out more about that on PinkNews.
6. Carly Rae Jepsen – Dedicated: Side B
No cops at Pride, just Carly Rae Jepsen and her sword! The queen of B-sides dropped her latest collection in 2020 and it was a 12-track album of songs that didn’t make it to the original edition of Dedicated. It followed up her fan-favourite Emotions B-Side album and features 80s synth pop bops like “Comeback”, “Summer Love” and “This Love Isn’t Crazy” and was a gift to her ever loyal fans. The vinyl records version of Dedicated: Side B is priced at £20 and available from Urban Outfitters UK here.
7. Kelis – Kaleidoscope
Kelis’ debut album Kaleidoscopic was released in 1999 but it’s probably even more relevant and influential today. It was produced entirely by The Neptunes and its sound, style and visuals are still being replicated by pop and R&B stars. The album includes her breakout hit “Caught Out Here” which features the signature and post-breakup mood line, “I hate you so much right now!”. The vinyl version comes as a bright orange disc for £28 from Urban Outfitters UK here.
The singer is also scheduled to tour the UK to celebrate the album’s anniversary later this year, which will see her perform the LP in full at shows in Manchester and London.
8. Shania Twain – Come On Over
Let’s go girls! No vinyl collection would be complete without the original country-pop crossover star, Shania Twain’s album Come On Over. Featuring anthems like “That Don’t Impress Me Much”, “Man! I Feel Like a Woman”, “You’re Still the One” and “Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)” the vinyl version is priced at £25 and it’s available from Urban Outfitters UK here.
9. Gwen Stefani – The Sweet Escape
The year is 2006, you’re sitting with your friends on the school field, someone gets out their pink Motorola flip phone and you hear, “Woo hoo, yee hoo”… life is good. That’s because it’s when Gwen Stefani dropped her song and album, The Sweet Escape and she ruled the pop world alongside Fergie and Nelly Furtado. The record also features “4 In the Morning”, “Wind It Up” and “Now That You Got It” and fans can get their hands on an exclusive gold vinyl edition of the album from Urban Outfitters US here.
10. Spice Girls – Greatest Hits
Spice Up Your F**king Life! No vinyl collection could be complete without the Spice Girls’ greatest hits album. We could name the stand out tracks from the LP but we’d literally be listing every single song they ever released (except maybe “Headlines”), so you know what’s on there and why you need it. And hopefully fans can refresh their memories on the lyrics ready for another reunion tour. It’s priced at £20 and available from Urban Outfitters here.
Meanwhile, over on the US Urban Outfitters website fans can get a vinyl edition of their album Forever, which was the group’s first without Geri. It might have had less of a cultural impact on the world, but it does have “Holler” on the tracklist, so that’s more than enough for us! It’s priced at $32.98 and available here.
11. Fleetwood Mac – Rumours
Another must-have for any vinyl collection is Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours. The iconic album is home to songs including “Go Your Own Way”, “Don’t Stop”, “Songbird” and “Dreams”, which went viral in 2020 after a man filmed himself riding his skateboard to work, drinking juice and lip-synching to the track. It ended up reaching the top 40 in the UK and the top 20 in the US, proving that the band’s music is timeless. It also garnered a reaction from band members including Stevie Nicks who donned a pair of roller skates to perform the track, because she’s Stevie Nicks! The vinyl edition of the album is available from Urban Outfitters UK here and is priced at £18.
13. Troye Sivan – In A Dream
Troye Sivan dropped his EP In A Dream earlier than expected last year after the global pandemic changed his perspective on music. He collaborated with independent artists on Instagram for the promo and more recently a clothing collab with Uniqlo inspired by the EP. The only downside is that this vinyl version doesn’t include the “Easy” remix with Kacey Musgraves and Mark Ronson, so we’ll just have to stick to streaming that on loop for now. The vinyl is available for £28 from Urban Outfitters here.
14. Solange – A Seat at the Table
Solange’s groundbreaking A Seat at the Table topped the charts in the US after its release, becoming her first album to do so. The album’s themes explore rage, identity and empowerment across tracks including “Don’t Touch My Hair” and “Cranes in the Sky”. It features her mother and father, Tina and Mathew Knowles, as well as Sampha, Kelly Rowland and Kelela. If you want the acclaimed album as part of your vinyl collection then it’s priced at £25 from Urban Outfitters here. The album’s stunning follow up, When I Get Home is also available here.
15. Kacey Musgraves – Golden Hour
The gay yeehaw agenda is truly thriving thanks to Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” and Kacey Musgraves’ Grammy-winning album Golden Hour. The country record sees Kacey take the genre into the 21st century, with sound and visuals that feel like a warm summer’s day, but also, possibly an acid trip. Tracks like “High Horse” and “Rainbow” helped her become a new favourite of the gays as well as her appearance at the Met Gala as Barbie to name a few things. Fans can get the vinyl version of the record from Urban Outfitters here for $21.98.
16. Dolly Parton – The Very Best of Dolly Parton
Another country icon that is beloved by LGBT+ people is Dolly Parton. Her greatest hits collection is the moment, it’s a lifestyle, a necessity. The LP features two discs with classics like “9 to 5”, “I Will Always Love You”, “Jolene”, “Islands in the Stream”, “Dumb Blonde” and “Baby I’m Burnin'”, showcasing Dolly’s amazing career which has transcended music and recently ventured into funding life-saving COVID-19 vaccines. Jolene could never! The double vinyl is priced at $28.98 and available from Urban Outfitters US here.
17. Lindsay Lohan – A Little More Personal (Raw)
This limited edition vinyl of Lindsay Lohan’s A Little More Personal (Raw) is available for $28.98 from Urban Outfitters US here. The album sees the noughties star reflect on her relationship with her father and growing up in the spotlight. It’s a must-have for anyone who was a fan of Lohan, the Olsens, Paris & Nicole and Hilary Duff, y’know, in the 2000s when pop culture peaked.
18. Promising Young Woman soundtrack
This much-anticipated film got a digital release in the US in February but fans in the UK are still patiently awaiting its release, so until then you can get your hands on the soundtrack from Urban Outfitters here. In a recent interview lead actor, Carey Mulligan told Variety that the film’s writer and director, Emerald Fennell sent her a playlist alongside the script which includes Paris Hilton’s “Stars Are Blind” and Charli XCX’s “Boys”, both of which appear on the official soundtrack and played an important role in the character’s creation. Also on the female-led soundtrack are MUNA, Sky Ferreira and Fletcher as well as Anthony Willis’ reimagining of Britney Spears’ hit “Toxic” that featured in the trailer.
19. Lady Gaga – Artpop
Justice for Artpop! The 2013 album from Gaga reached number one across the globe and was accompanied with a sold out world tour but it was still labelled a “flop” by some press and social media users because it didn’t match the heights of her previous albums. So now looking back on it many people consider it to be underrated. Maybe it was too ahead of it’s time for certain people? And yes, those people are tasteless. The Artpop vinyl is available from Urban Outfitters here.
Meanwhile Little Monsters in the US can get an amazing three-disc vinyl of The Fame Monster which features her breakout hits “Just Dance” and “Pokerface” and the album’s reissue singles like “Bad Romance” and “Telephone”. The exclusive vinyl is priced at $39.98 and is available from Urban Outfitters here.
