Chappell Roan’s cover shoot for W magazine has left fans gobsmacked, with the resounding takeaway being that the superstar of sapphic pop is serving Hunger Games, with a dash of Alice in Wonderland.
Roan donned a series of colourful, elaborate looks, including a Chanel dress, Valentino jacket and Marc Jacobs shoes, for the pop edition of the American fashion magazine, published on Wednesday (30 April).
Sporting a rainbow-inspired make-up look, with her trademark red-hair blown out into to a frizz, one image showed the singer wearing a detailed white gown while in another she showed off a blue dress, with a large fan skirt and huge embellishment on her shoulder.
Fans were quick to respond to the pictures, shot by Tim Walker, after Roan shared them on her Instagram, with some comparing the looks to YA dystopian fiction.
“It’s giving Effie Trinket I’m in love,” one person wrote, comparing Roan to the character from The Hunger Games books and films.
In the films, Effie wears flamboyant outfits and wigs and is regarded as a fashion icon by the residents of the capital city of the dystopian world of Panem.
Others compared Roan’s aesthetic in the shoot to that of Tim Burton’s adaption and re-imagining of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, which utilised his signature style that blends the surreal with gothic elements.
“Welcome back Queen Elizabeth I,” another fan wrote, while someone else said: “Rest in peace Vivienne Westwood, you would’ve loved Chappell Roan.”
Roan spoke to the magazine about her career and recent country hit “The Giver”, as well as an unpleasant experience when auditioning for The Voice.
“When I did the audition,” Roan recalled, “the producer or whoever the f**k was watching did not even look up from his phone. He was like: ‘OK, next’.
“I went up there and sang a cappella, the scariest thing ever. He never really looked at me.”
“With America’s Got Talent, I was 13, and we flew to Austin, Texas, and waited in line with thousands of people at 4am. I sang ‘True Colors’, by Cyndi Lauper. Didn’t make it either.”
