Colman Domingo gives a “revelatory” performance in Tina Fey’s “moving and messy” new Netflix comedy series The Four Seasons

The eight-part miniseries, an adaptation of the 1981 Carol Burnett comedy film of the same name, follows three well-off couples in their fifties, all lifelong friends, who embark on multiple weekends away together every year. Yet when one of the couples files for divorce, their friendship dynamic is shaken up.

Sing Sing and Euphoria actor Colman Domingo stars as “fun and flirty” gay man Danny, with his Italian husband Claude played by High Tide director Marco Calvani. While all the couples are inspired by the couples depicted in the original The Four Seasons film, Danny and Claude are reimagined as gay.

“I love that they’re based on characters in the original film, but tweaked. It was a male-female relationship, and now it’s a gay couple in the series,” Domingo told Netflix’s Tudum recently.

Joining Domingo and Calvani in their couplets are Mean Girls creator Fey and The Last Man on Earth star Will Forte as Kate and Jack, and Reno 911! star Kerri Kenney-Silver and The Office legend Steve Carell as Anne and Nick.

While reviews for the series as a whole are mixed – The Independent praised it as “terrifically entertaining” while The Telegraph dubbed it a “midlife misfire” – praise is fairly consistent for two-time Oscar nominee Domingo.

In a four star review for The Guardian, critic Lucy Mangan described Domingo’s performance as “revelatory”, adding that his “time for quality small-screen projects finally seems to have come”.

Digital Spy’s David Opie praised Domingo and Calvani as “endlessly charming together” in a “much-needed and sadly rare look at what long-term love can look like for middle-aged gay men”.

While The Four Seasons has been compared to HBO’s nail-biting comedy The White Lotus for the fact it’s about couples’ vacations being disrupted by drama, this breezy Netflix re-make isn’t quite as dark.

“People have seen me play in horror and drama and tragedy, and [in this] I get to just laugh and wear cute sweaters and have witty banter and sit at a table and eat food. It’s actually really nice,” Domingo told Decider recently.

The actor, who was nominated for Best Actor at both the 2024 and 2025 Oscars for his performances in biopic Rustin and prison drama Sing Sing, also got the opportunity to direct episode six in the series.

“I feel like it’s a gift, truly, to just come in here and have some fun. And to do the nuance of working on relationships and relationship issues is actually very interesting and intriguing. It’s not taking big swings, but it’s all the small, nuanced things between a friend group and your loved ones. I love taking that journey.”

Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum about the role, Domingo and Calvani gushed about the opportunity to work together, with Domingo stating Calvani is someone he is “comfortable with… physically and affectionately”.

“I couldn’t have been luckier to have stepped on the set with someone who cares so much about the partner he’s playing with,” Calvani added.

“He cares about me as a person… Those moments when we were playing together — to be able to get in and out of the characters with so much freedom and so much safety.”

The Four Seasons is streaming now on Netflix.
