Hollywood veteran Robert De Niro has voiced support for his daughter, after she came out as trans.
Airyn, 29, opened up about her journey and transition in an interview on Tuesday (29 April).
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, her father said: “I loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter. I don’t know what the big deal is, I love all my children.”
The Taxi Driver and Killers of the Flower Moon star has seven children, including Airyn’s twin brother Julian, whose mother is the model and actress Toukie Smith.
Speaking to Them, Airyn said: “There’s a difference between being visible and being seen. I’ve been visible, I don’t think I’ve been seen yet.”
She went on to say that “trans women being honest and open, especially [in] public spaces like social media and getting to see them in their success” made her realise “maybe it’s not too late for me”.
Her Oscar-winning father spoke to The Guardian in 2019, during Donald Trump’s first term in the White House, about his fears for one of his sons, who is gay.
In 2014, the actor opened up about his gay father, saying he wished they had spoken about his sexuality more.
