A time-jumping, surrealist video game, with a trans lesbian protagonist, is on the way – and we’re so here for it.

Upcoming first-person puzzle game Crimson Tale has turned heads after a social media post showcasing the game’s story went viral earlier this week.

Advertising the title on r/actuallesbians subreddit, Spanish games developer Thruster Games said the trans vampire would be among the game’s characters.

The story follows Elizabeth, a vampire who returns home after her true love, Christie, is killed by the cruel nobility. Once the oppressors have left, armed forces remain in charge of maintaining martial law.

Taking care to avoid the sunlight, the player must use their vampiric abilities to travel back to points in time to discover the hidden fates of the bodies littered across the decaying husk of the town. Elizabeth’s actions in the past can affect the future and bring her one step closer to avenging the love of her life.

The gameplay echoes that of cult-classic Return of the Obra Dinn, created by Papers, Please developer Lucas Pope, but with a unique spin: players have “blood magic” powers, helping them to avoid spots of light.

In the social media post, a Thruster Games spokesperson said that they felt “there’s not enough lesbian representation in gaming”, so the designers took it upon themselves to create a unique story about a lesbian trans vampire “fighting for what’s right”.

The game’s writer, Iris Lopez Romero, wrote in a comment on the viral post that the story also aimed to highlight the plight of the working class against their “oppressors,” and that she is “against neoliberalism and capitalism”.

On Bluesky, the developers said the game’s storefront on the PC marketplace Steam had received more than 100 wish-lists from avid gamers by Tuesday (6 May).

The title was also highlighted by Vice’s Ana Valens, herself a “transbian”.
