Model Suki Waterhouse has sparked online backlash for calling out ‘twinks’ criticising the looks at this year’s Met Gala.

The first Monday in May bought with it several toots (and a few boots) on the blue carpet for this year’s Met Gala – themed after the Met’s Spring exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style with the dress code ‘Tailored for You’.

Everyone from Chappell Roan and Shaboozey to event co-chair Colman Domingo and Diana Ross turned some jaw-dropping looks, with the more sartorial corners of the internet critiquing each look.

One person who has sparked minor backlash for her pre-emptive response to those critiques is model and actor Suki Waterhouse.

Waterhouse posted a TikTok which has (at the time of reporting) been liked nearly a million times, and been viewed nearly five times that, in which she called out “twinks” for their fashion advice.

“Cleansing my chakras in the hotel room before the [Met Gala] red carpet knowing that in merely two hours every twink with an opinion will be critiquing my outfit,” she captioned a video of herself.

While clearly used in jest, some fans have not reacted all too well to Waterhouse’s use of the word “twink”, a slang commonly used to describe slim, young-looking gay men, and debated whether it was an appropriate choice.

“Why are straight people using the word twink?” one user asked under her TikTok.

“Oh that’s not…” another added, with a third saying, “Idk if straight ppl are supposed to be saying twink.”

On X, where the TikTok has also been posted by pop culture account Pop Crave, a user wrote, “[I don’t give a f*ck” if I’m friend who’s too woke this is weird af.”

Others, however, have found the humour in Suki’s TikTok, with one asking, “And did she lie? Is the lie in the room with us?” A fair point, we have to say.

Another pointed out, “Here come all the twinks with opinions in the replies.”

“Idk who she is but she’s right and she should say it,” a third joked.

Waterhouse wore a Michael Kors garment for the Met Gala this year – which was full of its usual viral moments in amongst the gagworthy looks, including Kendall Jenner honouring queer legend Gladys Bentley with her look, trans icons Hunter Schafer and Alex Consani burning the runway and Lorde explaining her gender identity.
