It’s been nearly six months since Wicked was released, and we now know we’re not far off getting a (hopefully) good first look at the second part, Wicked: For Good.
Reimagining the world of The Wizard of Oz before Dorothy’s arrival Wicked focuses on Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) before she becomes known as ‘The Wicked Witch of the West’. Ariana Grande stars as Glinda and Jonathan Bailey as Prince Fiyero.
The first of the two films adapting the long-running and ‘Popular’ stage musical became a worldwide sensation upon its release last November, and as much for the tear-filled press run as for the film itself.
Ever since, fans have been clamouring for updates on the second part set to be released on 21 November 2025.
On Wednesday (14 May) fans’ prayers were answered when Cynthia, Ariana, Wicked director Jon M. Chu, and Universal announced via Instagram when the first teaser would be released.
In a video Cynthia says to camera, “We know you’ve been waiting for this, and it’s finally coming.” 4 June is then revealed as the first time audiences will be able to see a trailer for Wicked: For Good.
However, this will be when the first film returns to cinemas for one night only. A caption for the video only specified that this will only being the case for cinemas in the US and Canada.
Ariana and Cynthia then riff on the lyrics to the song ‘For Good’, set to appear in the film, with Ariana saying, “You will be changed,” and Cynthia adding, “For good.”
“Guess I’m seeing Wicked for a tenth time in theaters,” one fan wrote in the comments. Someone else wrote: “A teaser for a teaser. What a time to be alive.”
But many people around the world sought an update about the trailer’s release internationally. One person quite rightly enquired: “Ummmmm what about international fans.” Another asked: “WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF US.”
The news resigned some fans to waiting for a bootleg version on social media.
Though, with a movie as big as Wicked, we’re sure the trailer will be released for the whole world to see after being show in screens on 4 June.
Details about Wicked: For Good have been limited, indicating a tight grip by Universal, which should come as no surprise given the fervour around it.
Fans went wild earlier in the year when the first poster for the film was revealed and there have been a couple of behind the scenes shots from Wicked: For Good featured in extra content for the first film.
But Marissa Bode, who portrays Nessarose, Elphaba’s wheelchair-bound sister, has shared one update, specifically to her character.
In the show Wicked Elphaba uses an enchantment to enable Nessarose to move without her wheelchair, but Bode explained that “they made some changes” to the film version in a bid to be “less harmful to disabled people.”
If part two is as faithful to the stage show as the original, the story will jump forward and Elphaba will be known among the people of Emerald City as the villainess, while Glinda will be the people’s hero who works for the wizard.
The first film took more than $164 million (£130 million) at the worldwide box office on its first weekend, making it the best opening for a musical adaptation in movie history.
