Airyn De Niro, the transgender daughter of Oscar-winning actor Robert, has said she doesn’t find dating easy.
She publicly discussed her transition for the first time in April after stories appeared in tabloids such as the Daily Mail about her “shock transformation”. Now, speaking exclusively to PinkNews, Airyn discussed the topic of dating and how she approached it as the daughter of a celebrity.
“I told myself that I would not tell anybody about my parents until they said [first]: ‘I love you’,” she said.
She did this with her first boyfriend but as she transitioned decided to just get it out of the way and tell them “after we’ve talked for a bit”.
She went on to reveal that she had been “in a relationship for 10 years,” after meeting the person on Tinder. “We decided to end things about a year ago,” she added.
At the moment, she is on dating apps Raya and Hinge, and is talking to someone on the latter. “He’s very sweet. He lives a state or two away [so] we haven’t met yet,” she said. “We’ve just been face-timing pretty much every day and it’s been really nice just getting to know the person.”
Although “not a hook-up person” herself, she said: “Kudos to those people.” But after “way too many experiences” that put her sexual health at risk, Airyn wasn’t going to let that happen again.
“Honestly, I would like to take it slow with someone and date for a while and hopefully get married. I would love to have a family one day, but it’s not easy.”
After Airyn publicly came out as a trans woman in an interview with Them last month, her father, the star of hit movies from Raging Bull, The Godfather Part Two and Taxi Driver, to the more-recent Killers of the Flower Moon, said he would always “love and support” her.
Airyn also told PinkNews that her dad had offered to go with her to access gender-affirming hormones.
After coming out, Airyn thanked family and friends as well as the public for their support.
