Showtime has renewed the coming-of-age psychological drama Yellowjackets for season four.

The announcement comes as no real surprise, given the reaction to the season three finale and strong viewing figures throughout.

The series follows a New Jersey high school girls’ football team whose plane crashes in 1996. Much like Lord of the Flies, the survivors adapt to the remote wilderness in which they find themselves. It also features them 25 years later, showing how they have adapted to being rescued and returned to civilisation.

Chris McCarthy, a chief executive of Paramount Global and the president of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, was quoted by Deadline as saying: “Yellowjackets has become a cultural juggernaut, with season three shattering all previous records. We are thrilled to announce its renewal for season four.”

He praised creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson for how they “masterfully crafted an utterly singular, genre-defying phenomenon, a perfect alchemy of psychological horror, survival thriller and coming-of-age drama that continues to captivate audiences worldwide, brought to life by [an] extraordinarily talented cast”.

Yellowjackets won plaudits for its LGBYQ+ representation, with several queer characters, including Taissa, played by both Tawny Cypress and Jasmin Savoy Brown, in the different time periods, Van (Lauren Ambrose and Liv Hewson) and Ben (Steven Krueger).

One fan posted on Reddit: “Great news, just hoping we don’t have to wait til 2027.” Another wrote: “We hear the wilderness and it hears us.”

Someone else said: “I think our collective sigh of relief can be heard all over the world.”

Guest stars in the show have included Lord of the Rings favourite Elijah Wood, Joel McHale, seen recently in The Bear, and Hilary Swank, possibly best-remembered for her turn in Boys Don’t Cry and The Next Karate Kid.
