FBI issues chilling call for tip-offs on doctors providing gender-affirming care

The FBI has called on members of the public to tip them off about hospitals, clinics or doctors believed to be performing trans surgeries on youngsters under the age of 18.

The chilling call was made on Monday (2 June), right at the start of Pride month, apparently to “help the FBI protect children”.

There is no evidence that any under-18s have undergone sexual reassignment surgery in the US. A small number of 15 to 17 year olds are believed to have undergone less-invasive surgeries such as chest masculinisation surgery, also known as top surgery.

Claims that children are being “mutilated” through gender-affirming care come mainly from right-wing pundits, who typically misquote statistics on other forms of gender-affirming care, such as psychotherapy or the use of physically reversible puberty blockers.

The FBI post comes after US attorney general Pam Bondi said doctors suspected of performing gender-affirming surgeries on children would be investigated.

“The Department of Justice will not sit idly by while doctors, motivated by ideology, profits or both, exploit and mutilate our children,” she said, adding that the Department of Justice (DoJ) would “act decisively” to prosecute anyone performing the procedures.

Bondi, the country’s top law-enforcement officer, said the DoJ intended to arrest medical practitioners supporting gender-affirming care under “female genital mutilation” laws, which carry a maximum prison sentence of 10 years per charge.

The FBI indicated its support of the comments on X/Twitter, with a spokesperson writing that special agents would “protect our children and hold accountable those who mutilate them under the guise of gender-affirming care”.

The call echoes a similar move earlier this year when the Trump administration called on people to snitch on state school with diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

In association with Moms for Liberty, a notoriously anti-LGBTQ+ organisation – designated a “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center – the government created an online portal for whistle-blowers to report the promotion of what it called divisive ideologies and indoctrination.

However, the email associated with the initiative was reportedly flooded with hundreds of spam messages, including the entire script of the Bee Movie, as well as claims that former government advisor Elon Musk was a “DEI hire”.
