Sabrina Carpenter heard the criticism and has revealed alternative “approved by God” artwork for her upcoming album.

The singer announced news of her new album, Man’s Best Friend, earlier this month after the first single, “Manchild” was released earlier this month.

The artwork for the album showed the former Disney star on her hands and knees with a man standing over, her pulling her hair. A separate image shared at the same time showed a dog wearing a collar with a heart pendant bearing the album’s title.

The image caused controversy almost immediately. Some claimed it was deeply regressive towards feminism because Carpenter appeared to be in a submissive position.

Others said it was the singer playing into how she is seen by some as for “the male gaze” (when really she’s for the male gays) which also chimed with the lyrics for “Manchild”, in which she describes men as “stupid”, “slow” and “useless”.

And some didn’t have any issues at all and simply celebrated getting new music from Carpenter.

Now, the singer has taken to social media to reveal another version of the album artwork for some editions.

“Here is a new alternate cover approved by God, available now on my website,” she wrote.

The new black-and-white images showed Carpenter seemingly dancing with a man in a suit while other men loiter in the background. The alternative artwork will also be used for some of the vinyl releases as well as for the cassette tape.
