Where is she from?

Stalter hails from Cleveland, Ohio. She comes from a large family and has told The Guardian that she has two sisters, a brother, “lots of aunts” and 20 cousins.

She was a cheerleader at school

She described herself as a “nerdy” cheerleader, but “not popular.” Teachers made her feel “small and not smart.” However, she seemed to have enjoyed drama class.

Comedy wasn’t her first career

Before turning to comedy, Stalter tried nursing and teaching. The former proved problematical because, as she admitted: “I pass out at [the sight of] blood.”

She also tried missionary work, considering herself a “God girlie.” At the age of 20, she spent six months in South America with a Christian youth organisation but ultimately missed performing.

How did she get her start in comedy?

She started improvisation classes and, at the age of 24, moved to Chicago to try stand-up. She also had her own internet talk show. From there she continued making comedy online, found a manager and a following.

What was the meme that made her famous?

You’ve probably seen Stalter’s 2021 meme which she begins with “Hi gay!” In the minute-long clip she pretends to be from a butter corporation, trying to appeal to the gays during Pride month.

It’s a brilliant take on the pinkwashing we have grown accustomed to seeing during Pride and Stalter makes use of the all the clichés such as: “We’re sashaying away with deals.”

What else has she been in?

Stalter enjoyed a breakout role on the popular series Hacks, playing Kayla Schaeffer, Jimmy’s assistant.

She appeared in one episode of Queer of Folk in 2022 and also had roles in comedy drama Cora Bora, and Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain.

Who does she play in Too Much?

Jessica is loosely based on Dunham who also moved from New York to the UK. Jessica is in search of a new start in the romanticised version of London she has in her head.

Did she audition for the role?

Apparently not. According to Stalter and Dunham, the latter approached the star about the role on social media and offered it to her even before approaching Netflix about commissioning the show.

Megan feels a closeness to her character

“Jessica and I both wear our hearts on our sleeve,” Stalter has said. “We’re emotional, we’re dramatic, we’re weird, and remain that way as adults.”

Does she identity as LGBTQ+?

Yes, she identifies as bisexual. She told People last year that if she’d had more positive LGBTQ+ role models when she was growing up, she’d have “known sooner that I was into women”.

Speaking to The Guardian, she described herself as “a mostly lesbian bisexual”.

Does she have a girlfriend?

Indeed. The couple live in Los Angeles.

She had a boyfriend who was gay

On Who’s the A**hole?, she revealed that during her teens she had a boyfriend whom she knew was gay.

She’s been recognised as one of Cultured magazine’s Cult100

The list includes people “actively shaping and changing our culture in real time.” Other honourees in 2025 are actor Walton Goggins, lawyer Chase Strangio and comedian Benito Skinner.

Too Much is due to drop on Thursday (11 July).
