Lioness star Beth Mead has revealed what she said to her partner, Dutch opponent Vivianne Miedema, following England’s 4-0 victory over the Netherlands in their second game of the Women’s Euros.

The tournament kicked off in Switzerland on 2 July and the Lionesses are in Group D alongside France, the Netherlands and Wales, who qualified for the competition for the first time.

Mead previously told the BBC that having watching the draw for the competition together in December, it felt “inevitable” that they would face each other. The pair have been in a relationship since 2022.

Speaking to Match of the Day following Wednesday afternoon’s (9 July) game, Mead said she had not spoken “properly” to Miedema but “gave her a cuddle and told her we’d speak in a bit”, adding: “It’s hard. You obviously want your partner to do well but not when you’re playing each other.

“Obviously it’s a tough day at the office for her and she was there for me [after England’s loss in their opening game against France] so I’ll do the same back.”

Prior to the game, Miedema said she would “do everything possible to win… “if it’s not a nice moment for Beth, it’s not a problem for me”.

The striker, who plays in the Women‘s Super League for Manchester City, went on to say: “It’s tough – I’m with Beth – but I’ve got some of my best friends in [the England] team. That’s part of football. I’ve come up against this in club football before.”

Before the competition kicked off, Mead described herself and Miedema as “very, very competitive and professional”.

England will definitely qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament if they beat whipping-boys Wales on Sunday (13 July). The Netherlands will probably have to beat France – one of the favourites to lift the trophy – by at least three goals to avoid being eliminated.
