Donald Trump has been condemned for making a set of remarks about trans women, during a meeting with faith leaders earlier this week.

The president made the transphobic comments at a White House faith office lunch on Monday (14 July).

He began by imagining a story about a cisgender woman preparing for a competitive race, when she notices a “giant standing next to her,” inferring that the person was trans.

“When the race started, he blew by her so fast, she suffered massive wind burn,” Trump joked, prompting laughter from his audience. “And he got out of the race, went and had a little lunch, [then] came back and watched the rest of the young ladies finish.

“The whole thing is crazy.”

There remains no hard evidence that trans women have an inherent advantage in women’s sporting events, and his comments have been branded “reprehensible” by social media users

“Not only is it mean, it’s not even funny,” one person wrote on Bluesky. “Why is everyone laughing? This is just mean-spirited.”

Another said: “Everything we teach toddlers not to be, Donald Trump embodies.”

Almost immediately after his inauguration in January, Trump signed an executive order to prevent trans women and girls from taking part in female competitive sports.

The following month, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) banned transgender women from female competition.

NCAA president Charlie Baker said Trump’s decree provided a clear message, adding: “We strongly believe that consistent and uniform eligibility standards would best-serve today’s student-athletes instead of a patchwork of conflicting state laws and court decisions.”

Trump has signed a number of other anti-trans executive orders, including a national declaration that there are only “two sexes” and another aimed at banning transgender women from serving in the armed forces.
