In a stunningly brazen display of online misinformation, president Donald Trump shared an AI-generated, entirely fake clip of himself laughing at Barack Obama getting arrested.
The 79-year-old US president took to his Twitter-like social media platform, Truth Social, to share the AI-generated clip on Sunday (20 July).
In the fake video, which is soundtracked by the song “YMCA” by the Village People, FBI agents detain the former US president inside the Oval Office as a fake depiction of Trump laughs. The president captioned the entirely fabricated video: “No one is above the law!”
It comes after the director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, threatened to prosecute several Obama administration officials for so-called “treasonous conspiracy” over the 2016 election.

Trump is likely very aware that the clip is not real, since he would have been there when the arrest took place and would no doubt remember a former president being arrested in the Oval Office – unless his memory is failing.
Concerns over Trump’s “mental decline” have been raised on several occasions. In 2024, Cornell University Psychology Department senior lecturer, Harry Segal, said an “alarming” speech that Trump made during an October town hall event could be a sign of “accelerating cognitive decline.”
Dr Segal said Trump has shown symptoms of dementia in the past, citing issues such as his “strange gait” and the “decline in the complexity of his words and concepts.” He added that the president often “begins a word and can’t finish it,” a symptom known as phonemic paraphasia.
Nevertheless, Barack Obama was, of course, not arrested inside the White House. Donald Trump is the only US president to be convicted of a felony, and only the second president to have been arrested, the other being Ulysses S. Grant.
PinkNews has contacted the White House to clarify whether Trump is aware that the clip he shared isn’t real.
Trump administration calls for arrest of Obama officials
In a statement on Friday (18 July), Tulsi Gabbard claimed that declassified reports suggested that Obama administration officials “[laid] the groundwork for… a years-long coup” against Donald Trump following his election victory in 2016.
She claimed that officials had been “manufacturing intelligence” to suggest that Russia had tried to influence the election using a dossier that she claimed was unreliable.
“Their goal was to subvert the will of the American people and enact what was essentially a years-long coup with the objective of trying to usurp the President from fulfilling the mandate bestowed upon him by the American people,” Gabbard claimed.

The statement was issued amid mounting pressure for the Trump administation to release the remaining files on disgraced financier and sex-offender, Jeffrey Epstein
Several public documents relating to Epstein’s history of sex-trafficking minors before he was found dead in his prison cell in 2019 mention Trump in some capacity. The president has both denied they exist and claimed the files were doctored by Democrats.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that a series of letters gifted to Epstein in 2003 include a birthday note bearing Trump’s signature. The letter ends with: “Happy Birthday – and may every day be another wonderful secret.”
Trump has filed a lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch and two Wall Street Journal reporters for defamation over the article, claiming they acted with malicious intent.
