So, there’s a new Netflix murder mystery about trad wives engaging in lesbian affairs behind the backs of their MAGA-loving, gun-toting husbands. It also stars Brittany Snow, Malin Åkerman, and Jaime Ray Newman.
The Hunting Wives, consider us seated.
Adapted from the 2021 novel of the same name by author May Cobb, The Hunting Wives sees Hairspray and Parachute actress Brittany Snow as Sophie O’Neil, a woman who moves from Boston to Texas after her husband Graham (X-Men: Days of Future Past Evan Jonigkeit) gets a new job in the state.
Here, she feels isolated and alone, and – as per Netflix’s official synopsis – “grows close to a socialite – maybe too close – and becomes consumed by obsession, seduction, and murder”.
The socialite in question is Margo Banks (Watchmen and 27 Dresses star Malin Åkerman), who is married to Graham’s new boss, a cowboy hat-clad, gun-obsessed man named Jed (My Best Friend’s Wedding and Anyone But You star Dermot Mulroney).
Sophie, a Democrat, feels fairly out of place among Margo and her clan of fervent right-wing cronies, whom she dubs – according to Variety’s recent review – “mini-Marjorie Taylor Greenes.”
Yet Sophie’s bond with Margo grows when the latter reveals that she is far more liberal, both in the streets and between the sheets, than she lets on.
It’s soon revealed that Margo also has a close bond with one of the clan’s biggest red state, MAGA-loving ladies, Callie (Dopesick star Jaime Ray Newman), with the pair hooking up as per a sort of open marriage arrangement Margo has with her husband.
Of course, there’s also the issue of a dead body to contend with. The series reportedly opens with a flash-forward to the scene of a deadly shooting, à la The White Lotus, and alongside all of this right-wing rage, sapphic tension and “ample nudity”, there’s a murder mystery to solve.
Variety has already dubbed The Hunting Wives as “an addictive binge” watch, while the show also stars This Is Us actress Chrissy Metz and Scandal’s Katie Lowes.
All eight episodes of the series are streaming now on Netflix US, though a UK release date does not appear to have been confirmed.
