Comedian Stephen Colbert has had some choice words for Donald Trump following the cancellation of his late night talk show.

Making the comments during his opening monologue on the Late Show, Colbert highlighted a post Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday (18 July), where he had said he was glad the CBS talk show had been axed.

“I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings,” Trump said.

Responding on Monday (21 July), Colbert told the president: “How dare you, sir? Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism?” He then turned and added: “Go f**k yourself.”

After pausing for cheers and supportive chants from the audience, Colbert noted that the president had claimed that fellow talk show host Jimmy Kimmel would be next.

“Nope. No, no. Absolutely not, Kimmel. I am the martyr,” Colbert joked. “There’s only room for one on this cross and I’ve got to tell you, the view is fantastic from up here. I can see your house.”

Citing “financial decisions”, CBS has confirmed that Colbert’s long-running talk show would end by next year.

Colbert broke the news last week, saying the network was “killing off our show”.

Over the next 10 months, before the show is taken off air, he would be speaking “unvarnished truth to power“, and “the gloves would be off”, Colbert promised.

Celebrities were quick to back Colbert. Kimmel wrote on Instagram: “Love you, Stephen. F**k you, CBS,” while Severance star Adam Scott and producer Ben Stiller branded the decision “absolute bulls**t.”

Jimmy Fallon, Seth Myers and Jon Stewart were among others to voice support.

Meanwhile, members of staff at CBS have reportedly told The Independent that the cancellation was part of a “Trump shakedown”, while their counterparts on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show expressed concerns over whether their programme would be next.
