The first season of groundbreaking drag king competition show King of Drag has come to an end, and one competitor has been given his throne.
Spoiler alert: this article contains spoilers for the final episode of King of Drag.
After six episodes, a wild variety of challenges, and bucketloads of drag excellence on display, season one of King of Drag has come to an end.
Hosted by drag legend Murray Hill, King of Drag became the first ever reality competition series centred on drag kings when it dropped on Revry back in June.
It featured a cast of ten stellar performers with talents in comedy, music and, evidently, punny names, but only one king could be crowned by the time episode six rolled around.
Yesterday’s finale (27 July) saw Hill, alongside recurring judges Gottmik and Tenderoni and guest judges Lisa Rinna, Cole Escola and Kylie Sonique Love, watch one final, signature performance from the season’s top three kings – Dick Von Dyke, Henlo Bullfrog, and King Molasses.

While Dick Von Dyke tapped into his comedic roots with a stand-up set, Henlo Bullfrog offered up a stirring narrative performance, and King Molasses showcased some pretty eye-popping stunts.
As the judges whittled down the competitors even further, it was decided that Henlo Bullfrog wouldn’t be advancing to the final two lip-sync, and therefore came in third place.
It was then up to Dick Von Dyke and King Molasses to bust out some impressively funky moves to the show’s soundtrack, “KING”, by Frankie Simone, before the final decision was made.
And there we have it: the winner of the first season of King of Drag is… King Molasses.

It’s a completely understandable result, as the supremely talented King Molasses was the only competitor to win two challenges: first in week one, and then in week two.
He also impressed during week three’s horror-themed look and performance challenge. He may have ended up in the bottom for the final two weeks of the competition, but his finale challenge offering, and lip-sync for the win, were undeniably epic.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly shortly after winning, King Molasses said he hoped his crown – and the show as a whole – would help give drag kings more “credibility” in pop culture.
“This moment is so much bigger than me in terms of what this cast represents in media and the show’s groundbreaking nature. I situate myself as someone who works hard, and this is what comes with hard work,” he shared, adding: “This is a stepping stone for us in terms of what we consume and talk about drag.”
He continued: “I want to show that drag kings are no different than drag queens. We work hard in community, and because we’re kings, we have to work even harder to support ourselves. That added challenge is what makes us shine. I want my reign to establish our credibility as artists.”

King Molasses will soon be seen in the line-up of the tenth anniversary performances of Sasha Velour’s NightGowns, which will host a residency at New York venue La MaMa between 27 August and 1 September.
