Is Sydney Sweeney a Republican? American Eagle ad star’s voting registration confirmed

Euphoria actress Sydney Sweeney’s voting registration seems to have been confirmed via public records following backlash over her controversial American Eagle advert.

Sydney Sweeney, star of upcoming lesbian boxer biopic Christy, has recently courted controversy with an advert for clothing brand American Eagle that referenced the star’s “good genes”.

The advert, which was been defended by The White House Communications Director Steven Cheung, sparked outrage from some liberal voices who claimed that the advert deliberately glorified Sweeney’s thin physique, blond hair and caucasian heritage.

“Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue,” Sweeney tells the camera in the 23 July ad, which is titled “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans”.

Cheung called the outrage “moronic” after commentators and articles claimed the ad had sparked a eugenics debate; one MSNBC article proposed that “Sydney Sweeney’s ad shows an unbridled cultural shift toward whiteness”.

“‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans,” American Eagle have written since in a statement on Instagram. “Her jeans. Her story.”

“We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way,” the statement continued. “Great jeans look good on everyone.”

Is Sydney Sweeney a Republican?

The advert has prompted wider speculation over Sweeney’s political affiliation, after her family were the subject of similar scrutiny in 2022. Then, pictures of her mother’s birthday appeared to show someone wearing a ‘Blue Lives Matter’ t-shirt, in support of law enforcement.

Sweeney addressed the comments in a tweet on the same day, saying: “You guys this is wild. An innocent celebration for my mom’s milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention.

“Please stop making assumptions. Much love to everyone and happy birthday mom!”

Now, it has been confirmed that Sydney Sweeney has been registered with the Republican party since 2024, according to public voting registration viewed by PinkNews and multiple other news outlets.

The Florida Department of State, where voter information is public record, shows that Sweeney is an “active” member of the Republican Party of Florida, and has been since 14 June 2024.

An “active” voter means that that person is registered to vote. Sweeney has not yet publicly commented on the reports.

Sweeney’s affiliation was first reported by Buzzfeed News (2 Aug), after a viral post on X claimed she was “an actual registered member of the republican party”.

The Republican Party, currently led by incumbent President Donald Trump, has continued their crackdown on the LGBTQ+ community across the United States since Trump’s second election victory and subsequent inauguration, in 2025.

The landslide of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment has included a continued effort to ban transgender athletes from sports, a slew of anti-LGBTQ+ executive orders in the first days of Trump’s presidency, the shutdown of an LGBTQ+ suicide prevention hotline and more.

Sweeney’s next project will be Christy, a biopic of lesbian boxer Christy Martin. She will also return for Euphoria’s long awaited third season.
