Transgender Will & Harper star Harper Steele is set to be honoured by the city of West Hollywood.
The former Saturday Night Live writer, who became best friends with Will Ferrell after meeting on the show, will receive an official proclamation from the Californian city for her “advocacy and continued efforts to uplift the transgender community”.
The city will present the proclamation to Steele at an event on Tuesday (12 August), also marking the importance of her and Ferrell’s documentary, in which they travelled across the US to visit some of her favourite pre-transition haunts to see if she was still welcome.
“[At] a time when anti-trans legislation is sweeping through state legislatures across the country, representation and support for the transgender and gender-non-conforming communities has never been more important,” the proclamation reads.
It goes on to say: “[Films] like Will & Harper play a vital role in advancing cultural awareness, challenging stigma and celebrating the power of allyship in the face of discrimination and misunderstanding.

“[In] 2022, Steele publicly came out as a transgender woman, demonstrating immense courage and authenticity that has inspired many and brought increased visibility to transgender and gender-non-conforming.
The Netflix film shows the pair embarking on a their road trip after Steele came out to Ferrell via email.
Will & Harper is available to stream on Netflix now.
