Lana Del Rey has blocked trans singer Ethel Cain on Instagram, and it’s sent fans into a spiral.

Trans indie singer Cain, whose real name is Hayden Anhedönia, appears to have been blocked by Lana Del Rey.

The singer, who has one million followers on the platform, posted the update on her Instagram Story.

“Update: Lana Del Rey has blocked Ethel Cain on Instagram,” she wrote.

A search of both of their accounts shows that neither is currently following the other.

Lana Del Rey’s blocking of Ethel Cain follows her teasing a song rumoured to be called “All About Ethel”.

The song, which she posted a clip of on Instagram on Wednesday (13 August), appears to feature the opening lyrics: “Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post / Think it’s cute reenacting my Chicago post.” Many believe the song is referring to their previous connection to fellow musician Jack Donoghue. Both singers have been romantically linked to him.

Later in the track, Lana Del Rey sings, “The most famous girl at the Waffle House / I don’t regret it / The most famous girl at the Waffle House,” which is thought to reference Ethel Cain’s 2022 New York Times feature titled “The Most Famous Girl at the Waffle House.”

On an Instagram post published by PopBase who covered the story between the two singers, Lana Del Rey then commented: ‘I didn’t know who Ethel was until a few years ago – when someone brough to my attention the disturbing and graphic side-by-side images she would often put up of me next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters making constant comments about my weight’.

The singer added: ‘Then when I heard what she was saying behind closed doors from mutual friends and started inserting herself into my personal life I was definitely disturbed’.

Ethel Cain has yet to respond to these accusations.

@pinknews Lana Del Rey has accused trans singer Ethel Cain of comparing her to 'unflattering creatures' and 'making comments' about her weight. On Wednesday 13 August, Lana posted a clip from an unrealeased song captioned 'Title 13' which included the lyrics 'Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post'. Ethel Cain then posted to her stories 'Update: lana del rey has blocked ethel cain on Instagram'. Fans of the indie stars can’t believe the pair’s latest rift, with one person commenting under a post highlighting Del Rey’s action: “A gay person just fell to their knees.”

“Lana blocking ethel cain was not on my 2025 bingo card,” another person commented.

Another posted a shocked meme with the caption, “THE DRAMA HAS JUST BEGUN”.

“I’m a child of divorce,” another announced following the update.

Someone else captioned a GIF of Ariana Grande looking disappointed, “Not two mothers randomly beefing…”

Another commented joked: “this must be PR for a new song together- why would she make a post about it?”

Both stars have also been embroiled in rows about racism in the past, with Cain being forced to address her “deeply shameful” past use of “racist language”, explaining that she used to share social media posts to be “intentionally inflammatory”, and Del Rey previously having to defend herself against accusations of racism.

Hayden Anhedönia also revealed recently that she intends to retire her “Ethel Cain” character.

She told Popcast: “Preacher’s Daughter was speaking on my experience in the Church and as a child. Willoughby Tucker is more of my insecurities and frustrations and fears and inadequacies in love. It’s just as personal, just on a different tip.

“But all of this, since the debut, has to do with Ethel Cain, the granddaughter’s character. Now, after this record is over, we are officially closing that chapter.”
