Ethel Cain’s sister throws shade at Lana Del Rey amid stars’ public feud

The public spat between musicians Lana Del Rey and Ethel Cain is deepening, with the latter’s sister wading into the war of words.
In a since-deleted post on Instagram Stories, Cain’s sister Delilah responded to Del Rey penning a track about Cain, by referencing the “Video Games” singer’s recent string of shows across the UK and Ireland.
“I can’t wait to watch your hologram perform this ‘diss track’ while you hit your vape backstage diva @honeymoon,” she wrote.
“What inspired you to suddenly make a country album?”
Fan and critic reviews of Del Rey’s recent tour were mixed, with some complaining about a number of the songs being performed via a hologram of the singer.
Del Rey’s upcoming, much-delayed and as-yet untitled 10th studio album is also said to be country-tinged, a genre which Cain has loosely weaved into her work, particularly on her ambient debut record Preacher’s Daughter.
After Cain’s sister’s comments gained traction on social media, she wrote in a second Instagram Stories post: “Keep Cryingggggg.”
The tension between Lana Del Rey and Ethel Cain escalated publicly on 13 August, with Del Rey posting a video of her listening to a snippet of a new song she’d written about trans singer Cain.
“Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post, think it’s cute reenacting my Chicago pose,” she trills in the opening lyrics.
“The most famous girl at the Waffle House. I don’t regret it. The most famous girl at the Waffle House,” she continues.
Fans were swift to determine that Del Rey was referring to a 2024 photo of Cain with Jack Donoghue, Del Rey’s reported ex-boyfriend and co-founder of the band Salem.
The image showed Cain and Donoghue in front of a dam, making a similar pose to a photo previously shared by Del Rey and Donoghue which was taken outside the Cook County Jail in Chicago.
In 2022, Cain was interviewed by The New York Times in an article which dubbed her as “the most famous girl at the Waffle House”. A year later, Del Rey did a shift at a Waffle House branch, seemingly taking aim at the interview headline.
Del Rey confirmed that the song about Cain, which is produced by Jack Antonoff, would feature as the 13th track on her forthcoming album. The post quickly went viral, leading Cain to respond a few hours later.
In an Instagram Stories post, the “American Teenager” singer said that she had been blocked on the social platform by Del Rey.
As news publications began picking up on the feud between the pair, Del Rey shed some light as to why she wrote a song about Cain, alleging that the signer used to body shame her.
“I don’t know who Ethel was until a few years ago – when someone brought to my attention the disturbing and graphic side-by-side images she would often put up of me next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters making constant comments about my weight, I was confused at what she was getting at,” she wrote under a Pop Base post about the song.
“Then when I heard what she was saying behind closed doors from mutual friends and started inserting herself into my personal life I was definitely disturbed.”
Del Rey’s song about Cain is rumoured to be titled “All About Ethel”, a nod to the 1950s film All About Eve, in which a superstar named Margo takes fan and aspiring actress Eve under wing, only for Eve to use her for fame.
Cain has on numerous occasions responded to comparisons between her music and Del Rey’s, reportedly once writing on social media: “I’m going to be compared to that lady til the day I die.”
