MAGA Republican Laura Loomer has testified under oath that is is “well-known” that anti-LGBTQ+ politician Lindsey Graham is gay.

Graham, 70, has been a South Carolina senator since 2003 and has opposed LGBTQ+ rights throughout his career but has freqently been the subject of rumours that he is concealing his sexuality, despite saying he is “not gay” both in 2010 and 2018.

“Several of President Trump’s staff have told me in confidence that Lindsey Graham is gay,” Loomer stated during the deposition in her defamation lawsuit against HBO, which she is suing after host Bill Maher suggested she was having an affair with president Donald Trump.

“Hold on, Ms. Loomer, there’s no question,” Maher’s attorney responded.

“I know. I’m just explaining,” Loomer replied.

After the claims in her 4 June were briefly made public – and were being widely discussed on social media – Loomer wrote on X: “I was asked about Lindsey during my deposition so I had to tell the truth. I was under oath.”

It is not the first time Loomer has pushed the rumour that Graham is gay.

In 2024 she wrote on her official X account: “When is Lindsey coming out of the closet? We all you know you’re gay, Lindsey. And that’s OK. It’s OK. It’s 2024. There’s nothing wrong with gay people.”

Alongside Loomer, several well-known figures have implied that Graham is hiding his sexuality, including actress Whoopi Goldberg, comedian Chelsea Handler, Tony winner Patti LuPone and Maher.

The rumours about the politican’s sexuality reached a peak in 2020 when gay porn star Sean Harding claimed on Twitter, which later became X, that Graham has hired male sex workers and is reportedly refered to as “Lady Graham” and the abbreviated “Lady G” by male escorts.

The claims led the hashtag #LadyG to trend on social media.

Critics have condemned the rumours and jokes about Graham’s sexuality as deeply homophobic, with Thomas Balcerski writing in The Washington Post that the rumours “expose the expectation underlying this gossip: Americans have long expected their politicians to be male, cisgender, straight and married, and have scrutinized those who are not”.
