Jinkx Monsoon has shaded Republican ‘lawmakers’ for ‘rewriting history’ while promoting her Oh, Mary! lead role on Good Morning America.
Two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon is currently leading Cole Escola’s Oh, Mary! on Broadway – and has used an appearance on Good Morning America promoting the show to drag Republican ‘lawmakers’ for rewriting the history books.
The game ‘Oh, Jinkx!’ saw hosts Gio Benitez, Janai Norman and Whit Johnson throw “crazy White House” situations at the star to gauge her response.
The segment’s final prompt was: “You’ve just been told you’re the understudy for Mary’s husband and the show starts in five minutes.”
And to that, Jinkx responded: “Well, everyone, this is how it goes. Abraham Lincoln is now a trans woman, and that’s all there is to it. Since lawmakers get to rewrite history, why can’t I?”
While not explicitly named, it’s pretty safe to assume that Monsoon was alluding to Republican lawmakers – such as the conservative heavy SCOTUS, who have been formally asked to overturn the nationwide same-sex marriage ruling from 2015.
It’s not the first time Monsoon has shaded those with more conservative views; she recently called out JK Rowling for ‘identifying’ as a male author, despite her controversial views on trans people.
Jinkx Monsoon is joined by Ugly Betty‘s Michael Urie as Mary’s teacher, Kumail Nanjiani as Abaraham Lincoln and Jenn Harris as Mary’s chaperone during her Oh, Mary! run (4 August to 27 September).
The show follows Mary Todd Lincoln, the suffocated wife of then-president and ‘Mary’s husband’ Abraham Lincoln, in the weeks leading up to his assassination in 1865.
Monsoon has succeeded Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Titus Burgess in the role, after she appeared in Pirates of Penzance – also on Broadway.
Escola made history with Oh, Mary! at the Tony Awards in June, becoming the first non-binary actor to win in the “Best Actor in a Play” category.
Oh, Mary! is currently listed as on Broadway until 4 January 2026.
