A “spectacular” queer wedding ceremony has made history by becoming the first to take place in front of a ticketed audience.
Linus Karp and Joseph Martin, the co-founders of Awkward Productions, said their “I do’s” in front of a sold-out audience during an event at the Edinburgh Fringe on Saturday (16 August).
The couple, who have been together for 10 years, tied the knot in front of some 750 people at The Pleasance Grand. The ceremony kicked off with themed entrances: Karp was carried on to the stage, while Martin stunned the crowd by appearing to the tune of Charli XCX’s Von Dutch.

Complete with a serenade of 2 Become 1 by comedian Sooz Kempner, the couple’s rings were delivered by fellow Fringe troupe Recent Cutbacks in a Lord of the Rings routine, but not before the best man gave a dramatic reading of Miley Cyrus’ Party in the USA.
The audience gave them a standing ovation after Edinburgh City Council’s Jackie Blackburn pronounced the newlyweds “husband and husband”, ahead of their performance of The Fit Prince later that afternoon.
Speaking to PinkNews ahead of the ceremony Martin admitted that the idea to wed on stage during the festival “kind of snowballed”, adding: “It went from ‘this might be possible’ to ‘we’re doing it’ within, like, three hours.”
