The History of Sound has received a new trailer that’s heartbreaking and horny in equal measure, starring two of the internet’s premier boyfriends, Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor.
After an initial trailer for the Oliver Hermanus-directed film showed All Of Us Strangers star Paul Mescal and Challengers lead Josh O’Connor smooching in a stairwell and gently stroking (read: caressing) each other in bed, a second trailer for The History of Sound has been released.
Somehow both sadder and more sexually charged than the first, the new look at the film, which is adapted from the short story of the same name by Ben Shattuck, gives viewers a new glimpse at the pair’s romance.
Mescal also flexes his pipes (singing voice) in the trailer, with a haunting rendition of “Silver Dagger” by Joan Baez, over which images of Lionel and David snogging in a stairwell, rolling about in bed and touching their throats are seen.
“The sound is invisible. But it can touch something. It can make an impression,” Lionel says in the trailer, which was posted to Instagram by the film’s US distributor, Mubi, today.
The new History of Sound trailer also shows the film’s darker side, with David heading off to war, and Lionel begging him to not die.
“I feel like I’m at the end of something,” Lionel laments.
An official synopsis for the film reads: “Two young music students, Lionel and David, attending the Boston Conservatory in 1917, bond over their shared love of folk music. They reconnect a few years later, embarking on a song collecting trip in the backwaters of Maine.”
Mescal has already hit back at critics comparing the film with seminal queer classic Brokeback Mountain, calling the comments “lazy” after initial reviews from the Cannes Film Festival.
The History of Sound will also star Molly Price, Raphael Sbarge, Hadley Robinson, Emma Canning, Briana Middleton and Gary Raymond.
The History of Sound is due for theatrical release on 12 September in the US and 19 September in Canada.
A UK release date is yet to be announced.
