There’s good news for anyone who has ever dreamt of a bisexual Batman or homosexual Hulk, as John Cena’s queer superhero series Peacemaker has become the DC Universe’s highest-rated project of all time.
HBO’s James Gunn-directed Peacemaker series stars Argylle actor John Cena as Chris Smith, aka the show’s titular superhero Peacemaker. In 2022, when the first season was released, Gunn confirmed that Peacemaker is “open to anything sexually” – a notion that was first put forward by Cena himself.
On 21 August, HBO unleashed the first episode of Peacemaker season two, with one trailer showing the superhero engaging in a bisexual orgy, before being interrupted by his friend Adrian, aka Vigilante (Freddie Stroma).

Other scenes from the new episode see Peacemaker being lavished with kisses by both a male and female companion.
Peacemaker also stars The Color Purple actress Danielle Brooks as crime-fighting queen Leota Adebayo, who is canonically a lesbian.
Following season two’s debut, the show is now sitting atop Rotten Tomatoes’ list of the best-rated DCU projects with a wildly impressive 99 per cent critics’ approval rating.
The show also has a similarly strong 81 per cent audience approval rating.
While fans have so far only seen one episode, critics have seen five, and are clearly enamoured.

This puts it above major DC offerings, with 2008’s The Dark Knight scoring 94 per cent approval with critics.
2017 film Wonder Woman currently has a 93 per cent approval rating, and 2019’s Shazam! is certified 90 per cent ‘fresh’.
2021’s The Suicide Squad has 90 per cent and 2017’s The Lego Batman Movie has has 89 per cent critical approval.
Season one of Peacemaker currently has a 93 per cent approval rating from critics, and an 87 per cent audience approval rating.
Peacemaker’s success as a superhero show with LGBTQ+ representation is notable, considering the genre has historically been hesitant to include major queer heroes.

The first gay, bisexual and transgender superheroes across major superhero franchises have all only appeared on screen within the last ten years. No major box office franchise films have been led by an LGBTQ+ superhero.
Some fans of the genre are also famously averse to LGBTQ+ characters, with Marvel’s 2021 film Eternals being review-bombed for including the franchise’s first gay superhero Phastos, played by Brian Tyree Henry.
Peacemaker is streaming now on HBO.
