Lord of the Rings stars have sparked widespread thirst after posting a topless throwback picture, in which fans have declared, “Taking the hobbits to Isengard now has a new meaning.”

The epic fantasy trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien has a thriving LGBTQ+ fanbase, with many perceiving several of the books and movies’ relationships as being queer-coded

And a throwback image of two hobbits and an elf has sent queer fans into a spiral once again.

The film series’s actor Dominic Monaghan, who played Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybuck in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy, took to Instagram on Wednesday (27 August) to share an image of himself and his co-stars during filming between 2001 and 2003.

The image also sees Billy Boyd, who played Peregrin “Pippin” Took, and Orlando Bloom, who rose to fame as Legolas, in bed together.

“Longgggg nighttssss in sydneyyyy with the boys,” the Lord of the Rings star captioned the image, which sees two of the actors shirtless. “So tired we missed the first act of Madame Butterfly at the Sydney Opera House. Shameful.”

It’s safe to say fans were pretty excited about the behind-the-scenes image. “The deleted scene we really want to see,” commented one.

“Quite possibly one of the greatest photos ever taken in the entire history of forever,” added another.

“What happens in Lothlorien stays in Lothlorien,” quipped a third.

A fourth Lord of the Rings fan joked: “Life imitating the thoughts I’ve repressed…I mean art. Life imitating art.”

“My gf asked who is this throuple,” commented another.

“Lord of the Rings 18+,” added a different fan.

Legendary duo Monaghan and Boyd have previously shared their support for fans creating gay hobbit fan fiction and “shipping” their characters Merry and Pippin.

Monaghan told PinkNews, “In the books they’re great friends, almost slightly related as family. If people who love that world want to create their own ideas of the relationships, that’s up to them. That’s a beautiful thing.”
