The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey has hit back at haters of the series in a new interview, telling Entertainment Weekly “the game exists” if they’d prefer not to watch season three and play it.
Based on the popular video games, the HBO show has been an undeniable success since it began in 2023, but the most recent series has been review-bombed, with trolls posting homophobic comments on social media.
Starring Bella Ramsey as Ellie Williams and Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller, it tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a fungal infection that turns its victims into zombies.
However, season two of the series, which aired on HBO earlier this year and is nominated for several Emmys next month, has faced criticism from some viewers. Some viewers described the season two finale as “brutal,” with three character deaths that left audiences shocked.
The season’s portrayal of Ellie’s same-sex relationship with Dina (Isabela Merced) also sparked backlash.
‘You don’t have to watch it’

During appearance on Entertainment Weekly’s The Awardist podcast, Ramsey was asked about the “louder critics” of the season and shared that they “tried to steer clear as much as I could.”
They added, as reported by Variety: “Because there’s nothing I can do about it anyway. The show is out. There’s nothing that can be changed or altered. So I’m like, there’s not really any point in reading or looking at anything,” Ramsey said. “People are of course entitled to their opinions. But it doesn’t affect the show, it doesn’t affect how the show continues or anything in any way. They’re very separate things to me. So no, I just don’t really engage.”
They advised that haters of season two skip the upcoming season: “You don’t have to watch it. If you hate it that much, the game exists. You can just play the game again. If you do want to watch it, hope you enjoy it.”
Ahead of season three, co-creator Neil Druckmann revealed his departure from the show, which will focus on Part II‘s latter half, and follow antagonist-and-protagonist Abby Anderson (Kaitlyn Dever).
