Hollywood titan Colman Domingo invoked the spirit of RuPaul in order to clap back at some social media users who were less than impressed with his appearance in Sabrina Carpenter’s “Tears” music video.

On 29 August, pop’s bawdiest diva Sabrina Carpenter unleashed her seventh studio album Man’s Best Friend, plus a The Rocky Horror Picture Show inspired music video for new single “Tears”.

The hazy, five-minute disco romp features Sing Sing actor Colman Domingo in numerous states of drag and Carpenter in numerous states of undress, with Domingo’s character loosely based on the gothic film’s iconic gender bender Frank-N-Furter.

“Tears” sees Domingo’s drag character welcome Carpenter onto a dance floor full of LGBTQ+ outcasts, and then take her outside for a whip around a pole dancing pole in a cornfield.

While the music video received a rapturous response from fans of the unexpected duo, not everyone on the internet was impressed.

One such commentator caught the attention of two-time Oscar nominee and Euphoria star Domingo, after they suggested that the actor was deemed “too manly for a gay man” by Hollywood and was therefore told to get into drag.

“Hollywood ain’t s**t. Colman Domingo is a solid actor. He’s gay as well so I figured he’d be highly backed. But nope,” the commentator wrote on X.

“Guess he was too manly even for a gay man. Had to put him in drag in Sabrina carpenter’s video huh? Bulls**t!”

In response, Domingo used some wise words from RuPaul to get his point across.

It’s a character. Like all the characters I play. Calm down brother,” he replied.

“Enjoy the video and the fun that it possesses. Dance it out! It ain’t that deep. ‘We are born naked and everything else is drag’. Suits, t-shirts, dresses. All drag.”

“We’re all born naked and the rest is drag” is a lyric from RuPaul’s aptly-titled 2014 song, “Born Naked”.

Another commentator shared a still of Lestat from Interview With The Vampire performing in drag, writing: “They’re doing this to Colman Domingo right now. The general public hates to see a drag queen coming.”

While the comment was in support of Domingo dabbling in drag, the actor appeared to misunderstand the poster, as he responded: “Relax.”

After the poster explained that they thought the backlash to Domingo in drag was “ridiculous”, the actor replied: “Aha. I stand corrected. Big ole hug!”

Following the release of “Tears”, Domingo jested with his fans about the drag role and thanked Carpenter for asking him to be part of the video.

“Didn’t see that coming did ya? Thank you Sabs for inviting me to truly play,” he wrote on X.
