Snoop Dogg has apologised for criticising queer representation in children’s films, after he said he was ‘scared to go to the movies’ because of it.

The rapper, whose real name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., made headlines last week for criticising LGBTQ+ characters in the 2022 Disney Pixar film Lightyear.

The “Drop It Like It’s Hot” singer made the comments while appearing on the 20 Aug episode of the It’s Giving podcast, while discussing the Toy Story spinoff, which features a lesbian couple kissing and cradling their child.

Snoop Dogg has now responded underneath an Instagram video from Hollywood Unlocked of Ts Madison slamming his remarks.

“I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons,” Snoop wrote.

“All my gay friends no [sic] what’s up. They been calling me with love. My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6-year-old. Teach me how to learn. I’m not perfect.”

Snoop Dogg ignited the controversy over the character of Alisha Hawthorne (voiced by Uzo Aduba), who has since been defended by Lightyear writer.

“‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman,'” Snoop Dogg recalled his grandson asking him about Alisha and her wife, Kiko.

“Ah s—, I didn’t come in here for this s—. I just came to watch the goddamn movie,” he relayed thinking. “Y’all throwing me in the middle of this s**t that I don’t have an answer for.” He went on to say: “It threw me for a loop.”

Lightyear was banned in 14 countries on release due to the kiss.

Its star, Chris Evans, who voiced Buzz Lightyear, said during the film’s press tour that he was “frustrated” that such a small moment had generated such large controversy.

“It’s tough to not be a little frustrated that it even has to be a topic of discussion,” he told Variety at the time. “That it is this kind of ‘news’.”

Evans continued: “The goal is that we can get to a point where it is the norm, and that this doesn’t have to be some uncharted waters, that eventually this is just the way it is.
