Warwick Davis is reprising his original Harry Potter role in the new HBO series, and everyone’s saying the same thing, namely: “What’s the point?”
It was announced on Monday (1 September), that Warwick Davis will once again play Professor Filius Flitwick in HBO’s reboot of Harry Potter.
The reboot has garnered controversy over its association with author JK Rowling, who is executive producer for the project and is well known for her controversial and outspoken views about the trans community, including her wish to exclude trans women from women’s spaces.
Stars involved in the series, including John Lithgow as Albus Dumblesore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, have all faced backlash for agreeing to star in the show.
Former Harry Potter director Chris Columbus previously said he doesn’t under “the point” of the HBO reboot, as the final Harry Potter movie was released relatively recently, in 2011, and now the public is saying the same about Davis’ casting.
One person commented on the announcement of Davis’ casting writing: “Seriously. What is the point of this show? It’s been done.”
Another wrote more succinctly: “What is the point.”

Someone else simply questioned, “Why?”

Under a different announcement, someone commented: “What is the point of this series dawg 💀😭 Getting cancelled after 1 season 100%.”
Another comment read: “Hear me out… We get the same actor, to play the same character, and wear the same costume, and say the same lines!”
“Wow, now this show is even more pointless than it was before,” someone else penned.
Another questioned: “Re-using actors from the films, same costumes, same plot.. genuinely what is the point??”

A different comment read: “So not only is this show filmed in the same place as the movies and has near identical costumes to the movies but it’s also reusing cast members from the movies? Genuinely what’s the point of this?”
Summarising the thoughts of the majority, another reposted the news, writing: “Seriously, what is this even for?”
HBO also announced Sirine Saba as Professor Sprout and Richard Durden as Professor Cuthbert Binns. Bríd Brennan has taken on the role of Madam Poppy Pomfrey, while Elijah Oshin was announced as Dean Thomas, Finn Stephens as Vincent Crabbe, and William Nash as Gregory Goyle. Leigh Gill has been cast as the goblin, Griphook.
The series is expected to debut in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max.
