Ricky Martin’s trousers had a ‘wardrobe malfunction’ before his 2025 VMA Awards performance

Ricky Martin has revealed a last minute ‘wardrobe malfunction’ to his trousers that forced him to sew them up before performing at the 2025 VMA Awards.
“Livin’ La Vida Loca” singer and recipient of the first-ever Latin Icon award Ricky Martin nearly gave fans a whole lot more than they bargained for at the 2025 VMA Awards.
Martin performed a Latin Icon Medley chock full of his greatest hits at the ceremony, held 7 September at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York before receiving the Latin Icon Award – but in some behind-the-scenes snaps posted by the 53-year-old, he has shared that even the stars need some last minute emergency prep.
“Lots of laughter, friends and even a little wardrobe malfunction (I can sew if need be by the way),” he wrote on X alongside several shots of the hunk topless and stitching up the waistband of his trouers.0
“Lots of Make Up and grooming and friends around! it’s gonna be a very special day. Thank you Daniela Vesco for documenting it all this morning,” he added.

Ricky Martin, who came out as gay in 2010 and shares two children with his ex-husband Jwan Yosef, last won a VMA at the 1999 Awards, where he performed his hit track “Livin’ la Vida Loca” and became the first Latin artist in history to receive a nomination for the song in the video of the year category. The song won five VMA awards that year.
This medley included snippets of bangers “Pégate,” “Shake Your Bon-Bon,” “Vente Pa’ Ca,” “María,” and “The Cup of Life” before his acceptance speech was introduced by Jessica Simpson.
“Thank you so much, because it’s been 40 years,” he told the crowd. “I started when I was a baby working [in Menudo], and we’re still here. We just want to unite countries. We just want to break boundaries, and we just want to keep music alive.”

The 2025 VMA Awards have also seen Lady Gaga snatch Artist of the Year award and appearances from Sabrina Carpenter, Ariana Grande and more.
The 2025 VMAs aired on CBS for the first time, as well as on MTV, and a livestream on Paramount+ (for premium subscribers).
