Prime Video’s Overcompensating is “officially going back to school”, as the queer college comedy has been renewed for season two.
The ensemble comedy series is created by and stars Queer As Folk actor Benito Skinner, who said he had been “overwhelmed” by the support for the show since season one dropped in May.
“I have been so overwhelmed by the insane response to the show, and feel so damn lucky to go back to Yates University with Amazon MGM Studios, A24, Strong Baby, and this legendary cast for Season 2,” he said in a statement, adding: “PLAY SUPER BASS :).”
In an additional statement on Instagram, the actor wrote: “WE’RE OFFICIALLY GOING BACK 2 SCHOOL.”
He added: “Thank you so much for all your insane love for this show. And thank you for being so patient while Daddy’s been cooking season 2. One guy at Hudson News told me he’s watched it 7 times… that’s mental illness my love <3.”
Overcompensating follows Skinner as Benny, a new college student and former football player who is queer but in the closet. As he navigates his freshman year, he befriends fellow newbie Carmen (Wally Baram) and the pair embark on a journey to fit in by whatever means possible.
Cue endless awkward sex encounters, friend fallouts, and cringe-worthy attempts to impress the college’s football jocks – including his sister’s boyfriend, Peter (Adam DiMarco).
While season one saw Benny fall for his frat brother Miles (Rish Shah), the show ended with Benny still in the closet and his friendship with Carmen on the rocks, leaving the door wide open for Overcompensating season two.
Overcompensating also became noted for its incorporation of pop music and popular culture, with songs by Britney Spears, Lorde and Nicki Minaj featuring, plus a guest appearance by “Apple” singer Charli XCX.
The series also features appearances by Mary Beth Barone as Benny’s sister Grace, and a fan-favourite appearance by Holmes as Carmen’s roommate and enfant terrible Hailee. Owen Theil, Connie Britton, Kaia Gerber, Julia Shiplett and Kyle MacLachlan also star.
Overcompensating was critically acclaimed following its release, scoring a 93 per cent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Skinner first teased the possibility of a second season in the weeks following the release of the first, saying that he was “ready to go” with ideas for the next outing.
Speaking to PinkNews, Skinner revealed that his own experience of being a closeted college student in the 2010s heavily inspired the show.
“Everything feels really big in college and all-consuming. You’re in this bubble, so [it all feels] all like: ‘This is all life or death’. To me, it was at that time,” he shared.
