Reported Grindr outages coincided with the memorial service for slain right-wing podcaster Charlie Kirk, prompting some social media users to draw their own conclusions.

The service was held in Glendale, Arizona, on Sunday (21 September), after he was fatally wounded by a lone gunman during an open-air debate earlier this month.

It has been reported that tens of thousands of people attended the service, which coincided with more than 168 reports of outages on Grindr – the baseline number is two.

A Downdetector heat map circulating on social media shows an increased concentration of the outages taking place in the Glendale area. The problems continued through the following morning, reaching more than 200 at one point.

The lack of evidence connecting the two events hasn’t stopped some people on social media from speculating. One person on X/Twitter reposted the heat map and linked the outages to the service at State Farm Stadium.

Another user claimed: “The Charlie Kirk memorial has caused a Grindr outage in Glendale. Just a gang of hypocritical closeted LGBTs angry at their own coward a*ses and anyone brave enough to be themselves.”

Others posted the report of the Grindr outage, while on Reddit someone highlighted what they called the “hypocrisy” of the platform being down at the site of the service. “A gay friend of mine in Glendale just reported Grindr is down, with the outage centred directly on a stadium or arena,” they added.

In the comments, someone joked that there were no “Republican gay or bi men”.

Speaking at the service, president Donald Trump called the MAGA influencer an “American hero”, who didn’t hate his opponents.
