Republican lawmaker Ashley Hinson has called for a federal investigation into her son’s high school over a student-produced Bisexual+ Awareness Week video.

Hinson, whose 14-year-old son attends Linn-Mar High School, wrote to education secretary Linda McMahon to address the video, which she claimed was an “egregious encroachment on parental rights.”

In the letter, she hit out at segments in the video that highlighted “non-monosexual identities,” stating that “a non-monosexual identity refers to sexual orientations that are not exclusively homosexual or heterosexual,” and “non-monosexual identities emphasise that attraction can be complex and not limited to traditional binaries”.

‘Our schools should be educating students, not indoctrinating them’

The staunch MAGA supporter continued: “As a parent and a legislator, I am appalled that a school would assume the role of teaching and promoting sexual identity to our children. Our schools should be educating students, not indoctrinating them.”

“Exposing children to ideology that may conflict with a family’s values or faith, or that parents are not ready to address with their children, is wholly unacceptable,” she wrote, adding that she is urging the Department of Education to “launch a full investigation into this conduct at Linn-Mar High School”.

On X, Hinson claimed that the video is “so bad and inappropriate” she couldn’t repost it.

As reported by LGBTQ Nation, the school district said it planned to “tighten internal protocols” to ensure parents have the option to opt their children out of information being shared.

Hinson’s complaint follows the Trump administration threatening to rescind federal funding for educational institutions in at least 46 of the 50 states if they fail to comply with an order to remove sex education materials referencing trans and non-binary people.

A legal complaint has been filed against the US Department of Health and Human Services. Led by Minnesota, Washington and Oregon, the complainants claimed that the Trump administration was violating federal law by overstepping congress’ spending authority.
