Alexander Skarsgård, star of kinky gay biker romance Pillion, has revealed that his past experiences with men and women were ‘not really relevant’ to creating his dominant character Ray.
Starring Alexander Skarsgård as the dominant leader of a leather biker gang Ray and Harry Potter‘s Harry Melling as Colin, the naïve young gay man chosen to be Ray’s submissive, Pillion yesterday (1 October) dropped its first kinky, metal-studded trailer.
The 1 October trailer features a glimpse at Ray and Colin’s burgeoning dom/ sub relationship, the promise of graphic sex scenes, full-frontal shots from Skarsgård and the order to go and buy a butt plug.
But on the subject of playing a gay character, Skarsgård has revealed that his past experiences with “men [and] women” were irrelevant to creating the mysterious and dominant Ray.
“I found that in this case, it’s not really relevant what my background is. I mean, I do have a kid, but what I’ve done in the past, who I’ve been with, men, women…
“To me, what was important was that this felt like an opportunity to tell a story about a subculture I hadn’t seen portrayed this way – with so much authenticity,” he told Variety at the Zurich Film Festival.
He continued by sharing that he took inspiration from Al Pacino’s 1980 drama Cruising for the character of Ray.
“My experience of watching this on screen was through Cruising where it’s this dark underbelly of New York City and it’s dangerous, murderous and scary.
“Leather gays are scary. I’m no Ray, but I have a little bit of experience from that world and I know that’s not the truthful depiction.”
Alexander Skarsgård has for many years been in a long-term relationship with his girlfriend, actress Tuva Novotny, with whom he shares a child.
Pillion premiered at Cannes Film Festival in May this year, where Skarsgård smooched Pedro Pascal during a seven-minute standing ovation, and the film received positive reviews.
Pillion will be in cinemas from 28 November and will screen at London Film Festival this month.
