Clare Balding has been discussing her strategy for surviving on The Celebrity Traitors, revealing who she thinks would be a good ally to have. And her top candidate is someone she knows quite well.

The brand new all-celeb series of The Traitors, the ultimate game of betrayal and suspicion, is set to air next week and there are a handful of LGBTQ+ celebs in the mix. As well as Balding, there’s Alan Carr, Cat Burns, Tom Daley, and Stephen Fry.

Speaking to the BBC ahead of the series’ launch, Balding touched on her plans for playing the game. Claiming she wouldn’t make a good Traitor she said “you can’t” enter the game with a strategy in mind reasoning, “how do you strategise when, firstly, you don’t know if you’re a Traitor or a Faithful.”

But she said she’d learned from watching other series of the show identifying her strategy as to “keep myself under the radar” and “not be the loudest person in any situation.” She added, in regard to the missions, she wanted to be good to prove “you have a value.” Balding also said, “If you’ve got a real athlete on the team, I’d want to keep them even if I thought they were a Traitor, because they’ve got value.”

Discussing the game further she said, “It’s going to be very hard to put aside the knowledge you have of people, and the trust you have.” She then named Tom Daley as someone who she thought would make a good ally for her in the game. “I’ve known since he was very young so equally I’d want to be around him,” she explained. “I’d want to look out for him but then he could be a Traitor, of course.”

Also in The Celebrity Traitors cast are Charlotte Church, Paloma Faith, Joe Wilkinson and Lucy Beaumont. Kate Garraway, Jonathan Ross, Joe Marler, and Mark Bonnar also join. Nick Mohammed, Ruth Codd, Tameka Empson and Celia Imrie, David Olusoga and Niko Omilana round out the cast.

The Celebrity Traitors launches on Wednesday 8 October at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer. There will be two episodes per week on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
