The Celebrity Traitors premiere praised for ‘iconic’ Traitors selection

Alan Carr's role in The Celebrity Traitors was instantly dubbed 'iconic' (BBC)

The Celebrity Traitors has kicked off with the selection of three dastardly stars ready to betray and backstab their way to the top – and one choice has already been branded ‘the best thing that’s ever happened’ on reality TV.

Three civilian seasons later, and the Claudia Winkleman-fronted Traitors is back with a star-studded twist; the first season of The Celebrity Traitors has officially put its hoods up and selected its evil-doers with an 8 October premiere.

Much like the regular seasons, the assembled cast will compete in challenges in order to build up a prize pot. But while the Faithful will aim to root the Traitors out to ensure a fair split between charities of each star’s choosing in the final episode, the Traitors will pick the Faithful off murder-by-murder.

As is customary, the Traitors are selected via the nation’s favourite fake-tan-and-fringe enthusiast Winkleman at a Roundtable – and the producers have engineered some legendary choices.

The Traitors selected for this season are: TV host Jonathan Ross, queer singer Cat Burns and – and this is the highlight – comedian and funny man Alan Carr.

Despite no murder just yet, viewers have been quick to flood social media with excitement and praise (and concern) for the concept of Carr as a Traitor, not least because he can’t seem to keep a straight face.

“Alan Carr, easily the most entertaining/ potentially dreadful Traitor ever,” one fan laughed on X.

Another added: “Alan Carr being a traitor is, and I’m not being the least bit dramatic, the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

A third joked: “Alan Carr as a traitor… we are about to watch the most iconic tv yet.”

The cast is filled out by further queer stars such as Olympian Tom Daley, author and actor Stephen Fry and sports legend Clare Balding.

They’re joined by a veritable sweep of A-Listers, including rugby hunk and former England player Joe MarlerThe Fall of the House of Usher star Ruth Codd, singer Paloma Faith and actor Celia Imrie.

The Celebrity Traitors cast includes Charlotte Church, David Olusoga, Joe Wilkinson, Kate Garraway, Lucy Beaumont, Mark Bonnar, Nick Mohammed, Niko Omilana and Tameka Empson.

Celebrity Traitors airs Wednesday and Thursday nights at 9pm on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
