Miriam Margolyes has described herself as “unapologetically woke” and says she loves being a “left wing d***” – and oh do we love her for it.
The British-Australian actress, 84, is known for being forthcoming with her stories, opinions and thoughts on all things, be it her love of Laurence Olivier, her beef with John Cleese, or her solidarity with the people of Gaza.
The latter has caused the actress some issues, she has revealed. While appearing on RTE‘s The Late Late Show on Friday (10 October) the Harry Potter star was asked about her support for the people of Gaza, her identity as a Jewish person, and speaking out against the actions of the Israeli government.

When asked by host of ‘The Late Late Show’ Patrick Kielty about the description, the 84-year-old actress asserted “I am. I’m a left wing d*ke and I love it. I love being a lesbian. I'm not going to apologize for that. It's great fun.” During the interview, Margolyes also addressed her support for the people of Gaza and her identity as a Jewish person speaking out against the actions of the Israeli government. She stressed the importance of differentiating between Jewish people and the Israeli state, stating: "It’s very important people realise all Jewish people are not k*llers." #miriammargolyes #miriam #thelatelateshow #lesbian #woke ♬ Pink Pony Club – Chappell Roan
She stressed the importance of differentiating between Jewish people and the Israeli state, stating: “It’s very important that people realise that all Jewish people are not killers, they’re not bastards.”
While condemning the 7 October Hamas attacks Margolyes, who portrayed Herbology Professor Pomona Sprout in the Harry Potter films, went on to say: “I don’t want us to be changed by Hitler, by the Holocaust, into nasty people. I won’t have it. I won’t be changed.” She also confirmed she had lost friends and family over her stance, which she said “hurts.”
Margolyes also described herself as “left wing d***,” adding, “and I love it. I love being a lesbian. I’m not going to apologise for that. It’s great fun.”

The actress has previously defended her Harry Potter co-stars after they distanced themselves from JK Rowling over the author’s views on trans people.
In an interview with The Telegraph last year Margolyes said it was unrealistic to expect people to stay silent on issues that mattered to them. “They’re grown up and they have opinions. So why can’t they give their opinions? That’s fair to me,” she said. “They shouldn’t be trammelled because they once were in a film that somebody wrote.”
Earlier this year, Margolyes said that Rowling was “too harsh” in her views on the transgender community.
