Lesbian footballer Lucy Bronze has been named England women’s player of the year for 2024–25.
Fans chose defender Lucy Bronze, part of England’s Euros success, ahead of Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton who were second and third, respectively. The Chelsea right back was presented with the award by Georgia Stanway at the home of English football, St. George’s Park.
Bronze made 16 appearances for the Lionesses throughout the season, scoring five goals, and has revealed that she played the Euros with a fractured leg.
“I wasn’t expecting it but it’s always nice to get recognition, especially from England fans,” she said. “I adore playing for England and I have put my heart and soul into every game over the [past] 12 years. It’s a huge honour, especially after such a crazy year with the Euros. I’m very proud.
“The way we won the Euros, the noise around it and women’s football in general this year, has been out of this world.”

Lucy Bronze made her senior debut for England in 2013 and has 141 caps. She has also played for Manchester City and Barcelona. She is one of the out LGBTQ+ players in the Lioness squad but injuries have plagued her so far this season.
There is still a chance to see the Lionesses on home soil this year, with their Homecoming Series.
Having lost 2-1 to Brazil on Saturday (25 October), they face Australia at Derby County’s Pride Park on Tuesday (28 October), then China at Wembley on 29 November before taking on Ghana in Southampton on 2 December.
