Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly have announced that they will be leaving Strictly Come Dancing at the end of the current series – and RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star La Voix has put herself forward as their replacement.
La Voix, who is dancing with Aljaž Skorjanec on the show, made it clear that she’d be interested in the job. Her application had her fellow dancers crying with laughter.
During the show on Saturday (25 October), La Voix, whose real name is Christopher Dennis, showcased exactly why she would be a brilliant host.
After dancing a salsa to Cher’s 1998 hit “Strong Enough”, while dressed as the star, she turned to Daley and teased: “Oh Tess, you’re still here.” The host laughed and replied: “I’m still here.”
Later, the drag queen joked with Winkleman about the duo’s departure.
“Claudia, while I’ve got you, do you know the address where you send your CV to the BBC, just in case there’s any jobs coming up. I’m just asking for a friend.
Holding La Voix’s hand, Winkleman replied: “It’s quite soon, give it a go, babe.”
The ballroom erupted in laughter with Winkleman collapsing on to La Voix’s shoulder in giggles.
Fans have also reacted to the proposal. “La Voix is the perfect Claudia replacement but people are too strung up to admit it,” one person wrote on social media.
Another said: “La Voix stealing the entire show. Forget the glitter ball [trophy], give her the job.”
Someone else proclaimed: “La Voix’s already trying to take Claudia’s job.”
Writing on their joint Instagram statement, the two hosts shocked everybody with their news on Thursday (23 October). Daly has appeared on the show since 2004 with Winkleman joining 10 years later. “Now feels like the right time,” they said. “We will cry when we say the last ‘keep dancing’ but we will continue to say it to each other – just possibly in tracksuit bottoms at home while holding some pizza.”
They briefly addressed their decision at the beginning of the show. “We want to thank you for your beautiful messages,” Winkleman said. “We’ve got another eight weeks on this incredible show and a champion to crown.”
Welcoming the judges to the show, Daly added: “We cannot wait to spend the rest of the series with you, with our amazing couples and of course with these four.”
