A stage adaptation of queer film Pride, is headed our way and now we’ve got dates for when the show will begin.
The 2014 film, starring George MacKay, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Andrew Scott, was based on the true story of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, a group of queer activists who backed striking coal-miners in South Wales in the 80s.
The script was written by Scott’s partner at the time, Stephen Beresford.
A synopsis for the new show reads: “Summer, 1984. With miners on strike across the country, 24-year-old activist Mark Ashton tries to rally a disparate group of gay men and lesbians into forming a support group for the beleaguered strikers. Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners quickly finds itself entwined with a small pit village in South Wales.
“What follows is the remarkable true story of two threatened communities joining forces and discovering they have more in common than they ever imagined.”
And on Tuesday (4 November), it was announced that the show will run at Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre from 31 March to 18 April. It will then transfer to the National’s Dorfman Theatre, in London, from 11 June to 12 September.
News of the theatrical adaptation was first announced by the National Theatre in April, with the film’s director, Matthew Warchus, reuniting with Beresford. Christopher Nightingale, Josh Cohen and DJ Walde have created “an original score, with songs inspired by protest anthems, pop, rock, disco and the Welsh choral tradition.”

Warchus has said: “It was one of the greatest joys and privileges of my career to direct the film version of Pride. I’m so excited to be working alongside Stephen again, together with Chris, Josh and DJ, to bring this hugely emotional and inspiring true story to the stage and let it sing.”
Beresford said the project had been “nothing short of a joy”.
Casting is yet to be announced but tickets go on general sale from 10am on 14 November.
