Fans of Adventure Time spin-off Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake are rejoicing after the most recent episode appeared to suggest that fan-favourite character Hunter is transgender.
In episode three of season two of the HBO series, which aired yesterday (6 November), gardener and former wizard Hunter was seen stripping off out of his T-shirt, with his back to leading character Fionna as she watched on.
Once shirtless, Hunter appeared to have a small scar on the right side of his chest, which fans of the series have taken to indicate top surgery scars.
Top surgery is a gender-affirming procedure which reconstructs someone’s chest to make it look more masculine or feminine, so that it more closely resembles a person’s gender identity.
Adding fuel to the speculation is the fact that the voice actor behind Hunter is Our Flag Means Death actor Vico Ortiz, who is non-binary and genderfluid.
Ortiz coyly reacted to the scene on Instagram Stories, sharing a piece of fan art which depicted Hunter head on, shirtless, flexing his muscles, and proudly bearing top surgery scars.
“I gotta catch up to this week’s episode,” Ortiz wrote, alongside a knowing, smirk emoji.

On social media, Fionna and Cake fans have taken the scene as confirmation that their favourite character is canonically trans.
“HUNTER IS CANONICALLY TRANS!! THOSE ARE TOP SURGERY SCARS!!! HOLY F**K,” one person wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
“I like my characters CANONICALLY TRANSGENDER,” a second wrote, in a post which has been ‘liked’ almost 30,000 times.
A third excited fan wrote, again in all caps: “ITS REAL HUNTER IS TRANS IM GONNA CRY.”
“I motherf**king knew it there is no f**king way that ill ever be normal after this episode,” a fourth said.
“Hunter is trans and its shown and he is transgender… this episode has ruined me.”

Some fans are keener to “wait and see” if Hunter’s gender identity is officially confirmed during the remainder of season two, considering how frequently TV fans are “burned” with promised LGBTQ+ representation that doesn’t materialise.
Following the end of Cartoon Network’s hit series Adventure Time in 2018, the cartoon’s creator Adam Muto created Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake for HBO. The first season aired in 2023, with season two beginning last month.
The series is a gender-swapped spin-off of Aventure Time; whereas the original series follows Finn and Jake the dog, his adoptive brother and best friend, Fionna and Cake traces the story of Fionna and her best friend, Cake the cat.
Ortiz’s Hunter is also gender-swapped from the original series, which featured Huntress Wizard as Finn’s love interest.
Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake continues on HBO on Thursdays.
