American Horror Story actress Sarah Paulson is set to star in Netflix’s crime anthology series Monster, playing one of America’s most notorious lesbian serial killers, Aileen Wuornos.

As reported by Variety, Sarah Paulson is nearing a deal to continue her work with Ryan Murphy by appearing in season four of Monster, with production currently underway.

Season four of Monster will focus on the trial of 19th century woman Lizzie Borden, who was tried and acquitted of the axe murders of her father and step mother in Massachusetts in 1892.

The season will follow in the bloody footsteps of the successful yet highly controversial first three Monster series, which have focused separately on Jeffrey Dahmer, the Menendez brothers, and most recently, Ed Gein.

Yet, as season four will not focus on the crimes of Wuornos, and the season will be set around 100 years before Wuornos’ killing spree began, it’s likely that Paulson’s role as the serial killer will be minor.

In season three, which focussed on Gein, secondary plots explored how the killer came to influence popular culture. Wuornos’ presence in season four will likely be similar, exploring how Borden influenced the perception of female murderers a century later.

Aileen Wuornos, who was executed in 2002 aged 46 while in Florida State Prison, was found guilty of six counts of first-degree murder.

Between 1989 and 1990, while she was working as a sex worker in Florida, Wuornos killed seven male motorists who were her clients. She was convicted of six of the murders and sentenced to death. At the time, Wuornos was in a relationship with her girlfriend, Tyria Moore.

The year after her death, Charlize Theron portrayed her in the film Monster, with the star winning the Best Actress accolade for the role at the 2004 Academy Awards.
