Fans of animated Mexican web show Disventure Camp have been left thrilled by a non-binary character’s part in a romantic scene, which included a kiss.

Disventure Camp follows a group of people competing on an island for a million-dollar prize. As the challenges grow more difficult, alliances, rivalries, friendships, romances and betrayals become more intense.

The show was created by Jared Madrigal and Robert Castellanos and a fifth season is due to begin in January.

The scene that has fans talking is from the season four finale. In the woods, “non-binary goth” Tristan, voiced by Kai Ava Hauser, and “geeky guy” Benji (Winston Chen) discuss keeping in touch after the competition ends.

“Maybe as more than just friends,” Benji suggests. He panics and begins rambling apologies but Tristan steps forward and kisses him to silence him.

“You sure you want to give this a go?” Benji asks.

Tristan responds: “I’d love to. I mean, it’s kind of what we talked about. We can be out of place together.”

‘Proud to have witnessed history being made’

Later in the episode, they are seen holding hands as they walk towards the helicopters to leave the island.

Tristan is the first non-binary contestant to appear on Disventure Camp. However, there have been a number of trans competitors.

“I have never been able to see a non-binary character kiss in a cartoon before today,” Hauser wrote on X/Twitter. “It makes me so happy to be a part of that. Trans romance rarely exists, so this being so unapologetic is a bigger win than you know.”

One fan quote-tweeted the post, adding: “I don’t think you all realise how rare it is to have a non-binary character be kissed in a cartoon. This stuff is insanely important, especially now. Trans people are beautiful and lovable and I’m not ashamed to admit, I cried tears of joy seeing this. Thank you so much.”

Another fan wrote: “So proud to have witnessed history being made. A much-deserved win. Thank you for being part of Disventure Camp and giving life to the greatest non-binary character ever.

“We all hope to see Tristan again in the future. They made a deep-rooted impression on my heart.”

Disventure Camp is available to watch on Odd Nation Cartoons’ YouTube channel.
