Ruby Rose has not minced her words when it comes to her take on why Christy, the Christy Martin biopic starring Sydney Sweeney, flopped at the box office.

Christy follows the titular boxer as she transforms from a closeted West Virginia teen to becoming a super-middleweight boxing champion, as well as covering her troubled relationship with coach and husband Jim Martin (Ben Foster).

The film was released in 2,011 cinemas in the US last Friday (7 November) but grossed only $1.3 million (£998,000). According to Box Office Mojo, that puts it among the worst box-office openings on more than 2,000 screens.

There has also been a mixed critical reaction. The film currently has a 65% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Sweeney herself has responded to the disappointing turnout for the movie. In a statement she said: “We don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact.”

Taking to Threads on Tuesday (11 November) Rose shared her take on Christy’s success (or lack thereof). Claiming she was at due to play the boxer herself, Rose said: “The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing.”

She continued: “I was attached to play Cherry,” using Martin’s nickname. “Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.”

Unlike Sweeney, Rose publicly identifies as LGBTQ+ and indicated the Anyone But You star’s distance from her character could be a factor behind the film’s lack of success.

“For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying [Sydney Sweeney] did it for the ‘people’,” Rose went on to say. “None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cr*tin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”

Rose doesn’t mention anything specifically but her comments seem to allude to recent controversy and speculation about Sweeney’s political views. Sweeney has not commented on her political views publicly.

Sweeney also recently faced criticism American Eagle jeans ad, which went viral for the tagline: Sydney Sweeney has great jeans – a pun on ‘genes’ which sparked a backlash from some who claimed the campaign had undertones of racism and eugenics.

Prior to Christy‘s release, Sweeney was interviewed by GQ where she was asked about the American Eagle to which she said “definitely was a surprise.”

Given a chance to address the controversy, especially the racism and eugenics accusations, Sweeney refused to be drawn and flatly replied: “When I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.”
