It turns out Wicked’s Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo aren’t just in sync in life, but also with their vocals, as a post that shows just how much the pair’s vibratos are in perfect alignment has gone viral.
The original waveform image is from a Variety interview with the film’s music producer, Greg Wells, in January of this year. However, with the recent release of Wicked: For Good, a post of the in-sync vocals has now gone viral.
Of the image, Wells noted: “Ariana’s track was on top and Cynthia’s was just below it. I noticed that the shape of the vibrato on both… looked identical on both tracks.
“That stuff was so tight, it almost looked like someone had edited it to be synced up almost perfectly. But it is literally just how they sang it live in the room.”
He also added that he sent the screenshot to the two actors and singers, explaining it was their performance of “For Good.”
“I don’t think I’ve seen anything like this”
“Look how the timing, the dynamics, even the vibrato is almost identically in sync. No one could try to do this. I don’t think I’ve seen/heard anything like this,” he said.
“They both were so happy and couldn’t believe that was happening. Ari suggested I color-code the waveforms to represent each character.
“If they tried to do that, I’m not sure they could do it — I don’t think anybody could — but it just kept happening all the time.”
Furthermore, Wlls shared: “The chemistry between the two of them is my favorite element of anything in this movie.”
It’s appropriate that the perfectly aligned vocals are for the track “For Good”, a sapphic-coded final duet between Elphaba (Erivo) and Glinda (Grande). Their vocals have been particularly spotlighted in the second instalment of Wicked. So much so, the pair are contenders for this year’s UK Christmas Number One.
Having got a hold of the waveform image of Grande and Erivo’s vocals, fans were equally stunned and impressed.
“Two voices locking perfectly”
“Two voices locking perfectly like the song chose that moment for them,” one fan posted in response to the vocal showcase.
Fans also compared their pairing to the “Two Voices, One Song” track in the film Barbie & the Diamond Castle.
In response to the post, one user declared: “they gotta play this next.” Perhaps Grande and Erivo’s new roles will be a live-action Barbie movie as Princess Liana and Princess Alexa.
Another fan declared in response to their matching vocals: “So they need to get this tatted together actually.”
Someone also jokingly noted: “People will look you straight in the face and claim that this was bad casting lol.”
Wicked: For Good is out now with a highly successful release. On its opening weekend, the film grossed $226 million (£173 million) worldwide and earned $147 million at the domestic box office, the biggest opening weekend for a Broadway adaptation.
