Ginger Johnson has made her way from the RuPaul’s Drag Race UK stage to the kitchen as she, or rather, Donald Marshall, competes in the 2025 Celebrity Masterchef final.
It was announced in October that the Drag Race UK star would be in the line-up and she follows in the footsteps of Kitty Scott-Claus, who went from season three in 2021, to compete in Celebrity Masterchef the following year.
Now, Ginger could be set to snatch another reality TV competition crown when she goes up against presenter Dawn O’Porter, actor and singer Alfie Boe and former rugby star Alun Wyn Jones in Tuesday’s (16 December) Celebrity Masterchef final.
“It feels very surreal to be a Masterchef finalist. There is no way in a million years I thought I’d still be here in the competition at this point – but it feels really good”, said Ginger ahead of the episode.
The grand finale will see judges Grace Dent and John Torode challenge the final four to make a dish dedicated to someone special, raising the question of whether viewers could see Ginger produce a meal shaped like Michelle Visage.
But who is Donald Marshall aka Ginger Johnson? Here’s what we know.
Where is David from?
Marshall is County Durham. He was inspired to become a pantomime dame at a young age by watching the comedian Chris Hayward perform. He later studied at Newcastle University.
Who is Ginger Johnson?
Ginger Johnson is the drag alter ego of Donald Marshall. An English drag queen, she made a name for herself in the London LGBTQ+ nightlife scene before appearing on the fifth season of Drag Race UK.
How did Ginger do on Drag Race UK?
She won season five after a memorable time on the show, which included an impersonation of author Barbara Cartland during the Snatch Game.
What’s she done since?
Since Drag Race success, Ginger has gone on to create her own sitcom/chat show, Ginger’s House. She’s also performed solo shows at the Soho Theatre, in London, and toured the UK as part of the “Angels of the North.”
Who is Ginger Johnson’s partner?
Ginger Johnson’s partner Ben was seen supporting her during the RuPaul’s Drag Race season five finale.
“You’re such a powerhouse and so determined and driven to do what you want to do to make your life better – to make our lives better”, Ben told Ginger during the episode. “There aren’t enough words, I love you.”
Celebrity Masterchef airs on BBC1 from 8pm on Tuesday (18 November) with a new episode on Thursday (20 November) at 9pm.
