Christmas at the LA home of Tom Daley and his husband, Dustin Lance Black, will be filled with homemade goodness.

The couple, who married in 2017 after being together for four years, share two sons, Robbie and Phoenix, whom they welcomed via surrogacy.

They beam when they talk about time spent with their family and friends, and when discussing the gifts they plan to exchange this year, Tom shares that most will be handmade.

“I think it’s the most meaningful gift that you can give,” says Tom when discussing gifting handmade items.

“This is a very handmade house,” Lance tells PinkNews, referring to Tom as “Mr Knitter” and agreeing that he “feels love” in Tom’s handmade gifts.

‘I’ve made Lance a scrapbook every year for Christmas’

Alongside knitted and crocheted presents, Tom, who is working to make his crafts more accessible to everyone, reveals that he’s made Lance a scrapbook every year for Christmas.

“So we now currently have 13 scrapbooks of photos and things that the kids are now able to look through, from when we first met all the way up until now.”

He proudly shares that the scrapbooks have become a “tradition”, alongside their enthusiasm for hosting family and friends, whom they encourage to bring side dishes.

Lance fondly recalls his childhood Christmases, noting that he didn’t know how his mum “scraped it together”, but that “she always made sure Christmas was really good”.

“It would bring me to tears to think about what she must have had to do to make it feel like Christmas was good.

“I learned one lesson about money there, which is money spent on memories and experiences with the family is the greatest gift there is, because memories builder a greater, stronger sense of family.”

‘Every year is the new biggest holiday dinner’

Together, the pair host Thanksgiving every year, and it must be a success as Lance notes that the guest list “keeps growing”. This year, they hosted 28 family members and friends.

“Every year is the new biggest holiday dinner,” Lance jokes.

Christmas is an expensive time, and in a bid to plan better for the future, the pair recently started using Starling Bank’s “What’s your Money Language” tool.

“When we first met, we never really talked about money,” the Olympic gold medallist says.

Lance shares that he has a scarcity mindset, meaning he prefers to save, while Tom aligns in the lifestyle enrichment category, which reflects his desire to spend on experiences, especially with friends and family.

“I think for me that comes from losing my dad at a young age and realising life is so short. Although you want to work hard and future-proof, you also have to live in the moment a little bit, if you are lucky enough to be able to, like we are,” Tom says.

Lance interjects, joking that Tom likes to grab every last-minute purchase he can while queuing at the checkout.

“I put on my blinders and I try to move past it all, while he fills the basket,” he laughs.

‘We are lucky in many ways’

Lance, who wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay to Milk, the biopic about the gay rights activist, Harvey Milk, notes that although they have been together for 13 years, they have only just begun discussing finances, despite sharing a joint account.

“We certainly don’t define ourselves by the car that we get into,” Lance adds, referring to their spending habits.

“We are lucky in many ways. One of them is that we matched up without knowing it,” he says of their money mindsets.

He’s right – and it’s not only in their approach to money that they fit well together. They complement each other beautifully in every way, making it obvious why their Thanksgiving dinners continue to grow every year.
